(Nov. 7, 2017) The Portland Bureau of Transportation will offer a demonstration of its popular Leaf Day service at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8 in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood. News media are invited to attend this special preview of Leaf Day service, which begins on Portland streets this Saturday, Nov. 11 and goes though Dec. 20.
An estimated 250,000 trees drop leaves on Portland streets that can become a slick hazard for people walking, biking, rolling or driving. For our crews to get the best sweep possible, everyone in a Leaf District should know their Leaf Day and prepare for it. The day before Leaf Day, rake your leaves 12 inches away from the curb. Move your car off the street or out of that Leaf district so our crews can clear the street. Move basketball hoops and branches to provide 11 feet of clearance.
In Ladd's Addition last year, PBOT cleared 223 cubic yards of leaves, weighing 155 tons. Citywide, crews cleared 12,600 cubic yards of leaves weighing 7,135 tons. For more information, see portlandoregon.gov/leafday to look up your Leaf Day, or sign up for email or text message Leaf Day reminders, or the public can call 503-865-LEAF (5323) for billing questions.
Next week, PBOT and regional partner agencies will offer more winter weather preparation information for the public and the news media.
What: Leaf Day media demo shows PBOT crews using a variety of equipment on one segment of street in advance of the first Leaf Day, which is Saturday. A PBOT spokesman will be available to answer questions and provide public guidance on how to prepare for Leaf Day.
When: 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017
Where: Meet at intersection of SE Lavender and SE Ladd Ave. Crews will sweep one side of SE Ladd Ave, between the Ladd Circle Park & Rose Gardens and SE Lavender St.
Why: PBOT is the lead agency for the City of Portland's winter weather response. PBOT's Leaf Day service makes our streets safe by providing an enhanced sweeping in areas with the densest tree coverage.
Visuals: A variety of large equipment and trucks -- pushers, loaders, flushers and dump trucks -- will be used to clear leaves on one segment of a street in a Leaf District. A PBOT public information officer will be available for interviews.
