Portland Bureau of Transportationw burnside safety improvements

Dear West Burnside stakeholders,

As many of you know, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has a series of safety projects in various stages of development on West Burnside. I wanted to take a moment to update you on the progress of these projects which are shown on the map below.

W Burnside project map

1. W Burnside Sidewalk Infill from NW 24th to Uptown Terrace

This project will install new sidewalk along the north side of W Burnside between NW Uptown Terrace and 24th Place. In light of the number of slides W Burnside has experienced this winter, we have increased the height of the new retaining wall that will protect the sidewalk. The project is headed out to bid now and is on schedule for construction this summer.

2. W Burnside and 20th Place Crossing Improvement

This project will install a new traffic signal at the existing marked crosswalk at 20th Place, improving pedestrian safety. The project will close the 25ft section of 20th Place between Burnside and Morrison, creating a larger plaza and combined TriMet stop. Construction is anticipated in 2018.

3. W Burnside Multimodal Project (18th & 19th)

Due to the complexity of the design, the W Burnside Multimodal project is now slated for construction next spring (2018). Although the West Burnside Multimodal Study on which the project is based provided a strong foundation, creating a protected intersection design that works well and intuitively for people walking and biking as well as transit and people driving was more challenging than anticipated and we now are unable to finalize the design in advance of this summer's construction season.

W Burnside revised 30% drawing

The good news is the extra time spent on design will result in a better project. We've increased the size of the transit island and added pedestrian access to it's west end. The revised design creates a shorter pedestrian crossing of SW 19th to the transit island and allows for a continuous and more direct walking route on the south side of W Burnside (shown in yellow). We've also revised the design for people biking, utilizing raise cycle tracks (shown in green).

An additional development related to the project is a new bus shelter which was installed on the transit island earlier this month.

TriMet installed the new prototype shelter in partnership with Lamar Transit Advertising, at the eastbound bus stop at W Burnside & 18th (Stop ID 9860). PBOT worked with TriMet to provide power to the new shelter, which incorporates a digital advertising panel.

TriMet is interested in your feedback on the new shelter. If you have thoughts about this new design, please share them with TriMet by calling 503-238-RIDE (7433) or emailing comments@trimet.org.

4. I-405 Crossing Improvements on W Burnside and NW Couch

The Downtown I-405 Pedestrian Safety and Operational Improvements project (as it is official known) is now in the design phase.

This project will improve pedestrian crossings across I-405 on W Burnside and NW Couch and simplify driving southbound on NW 16th. This federally-funded project is slated for 2018/2019 construction.
