Livable Streets: What is happening in Portland's streets?

Portland in the Streets Logo

Have you ever thought of using the street for a party; as a space to meet your neighbors? Or how about for a pop-up skate park? Think these are crazy ideas? Well think again!

Portland's Livable Streets Strategy is a citywide initiative to open Portland's streets for people and to help community groups create and activate their own spaces, that are unique to their own neighborhoods.

To-date, the PBOT Project Team, in consultation with the Stakeholder and Technical Advisory Committees, is working to answer these three guiding questions of the Livable Streets project:

  1. What are the activities Portland wants on its streets?
  2. How can PBOT open the streets for those activities?
  3. How can PBOT make these activities more accessible for the public and its community partners?

So what are some of the activities that are already happening in and on Portland streets? There are so many! As the examples below demonstrate, Portlander's are already involved in placemaking projects across the city.

Through the Livable Streets Strategy, we want to open Portland's streets and public right of way to more placemaking, that reflects the wants and needs of the community and still balances the transportation functions of the system.
