News Release:
Sunday Parkways celebrates the new Sellwood Bridge, downtown Milwaukie

(Sept. 29, 2016) – This Sunday, the City of Portland Sunday Parkways presented by Kaiser Permanente will celebrate the new Sellwood Bridge and introduce thousands of people to walking and biking connections to downtown Milwaukie. The event that opens 8 miles of streets and public spaces for people to walk, bike and roll takes place on Oct. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is the fifth and final Sunday Parkways of 2016.

This new route takes participants through the City of Milwaukie and the Sellwood area of Portland using local transportation amenities, such as the Sellwood Bridge and Springwater Corridor Trail, as well as city streets. The route highlights the scenic beauty of the area, promotes popular biking and walking routes, and brings people together at four major activity centers in downtown Milwaukie, Sellwood and Westmoreland Parks in Portland and Water Tower Park in Milwaukie.

There is no official starting place or direction. Those who would like to join in are invited to connect at any location along the route, and travel in either direction, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers and route markers will help ensure participants stay on course.

The activity centers will offer family-friendly fun, booths from local vendors, bicycle obstacle course, food, and live music. The downtown Milwaukie location will host food vendors, a beer garden, the Milwaukie Farmers Market, and the main concert stage, in front of City Hall. An eclectic and rousing group of bands have been assembled for this year’s lineup, including LoveBomb Go-Go Marching Band (horn-driven, intergalactic glam performance band), GoldDust (Fleetwood Mac tribute band), GTM String Band (bluegrass), and The Pearls (country rock/Americana).

For the second year in a row, the Portland Bureau of Transportation is partnering with the Salmon Celebration at Westmoreland Park. Local Native tribes and the Bureau of Environmental Services will have fire-baked salmon, drumming, entertainment, and information about how to keep Portland’s rivers clean.

During the event, streets along the route will be closed to through traffic, however, local access can be coordinated with intersection and traffic volunteers. Residents who live along the route are encouraged to create their own mini-events in their front yards, driveways or parking lots. Neighbors are welcome to have a party, plan a yard sale, set up a lemonade stand, host live music and other similar activities.

Sunday Parkways is a series of five free community events opening the city's largest public space – its streets – for people to walk, bike, roll and discover active transportation.  The event series, held in a different neighborhood once a month from May to September, is hugely popular; total attendance topped 119,000 in 2015.

The event’s detailed Sunday Parkways route map  shows the route as well as bus and light rail options to help area residents get to Sunday Parkways via bike and transit. A schedule and listing of event highlights are available on the Sunday Parkways Sellwood/Milwaukie Sunday Parkways brochure.
