New PERS policy — reviewing membership eligibility established before 2006
This year, PERS formalized a new policy for determining membership eligibility for employment periods before 2006, when standards were different from today.
The new policy states that, when reviewing a PERS member’s account for a retirement benefit or a data verification, PERS staff will validate the employer’s hire intent* for the position using the membership-qualification standards that were in place at the time of the employment period — not the standards in place today.
Read new employer announcement 105, Determining Membership Eligibility Prior to January 1, 2006, for Tier One and Tier Two Members (PDF), for a complete explanation of the new policy and how it affects you.
*Hire intent is an employer’s designation of an employee’s position as “qualifying” or “non-qualifying” for PERS membership.
