✨5 Practical Tips for Supporting a Child with Autism During the Holiday Season✨
The holidays can be exciting, but for many autistic children, this time of year can also be challenging. Changes in routines, crowded gatherings, and noisy environments may feel overwhelming. With thoughtful preparation and support, you can help your child feel safe, comfortable, and included throughout the season.
- Prepare them Ahead of Time–Keep Routines the Same when Possible
Many autistic children thrive when they know what to expect. Use pictures, short videos, or simple stories to show what the holidays might look like can be helpful. Consider holiday gatherings, visits to family and friends, flying on a plane, etc. Talk about and show them what they will do during these activities. Predictability helps reduce anxiety.
Try to keep consistent mealtimes, nap schedules, and favorite calming activities, even while traveling or visiting family. Bring familiar items like a favorite blanket, toy, stuffed animal or tablet to help provide comfort in new environments.
- Plan for Sensory Needs
Holiday settings can also be full of bright lights, strong smells, and loud sounds. Offer sensory supports such as noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, hats, or fidget tools as needed. Try to create a quiet space where your child can take a break during larger gatherings, even if it’s just a cozy corner or a room with dim lighting.
- Prepare Family and Friends
Let relatives know how best to support your child. You might explain that your child may need extra space, time to warm up, or may not want a big hug. Helping others understand your child’s needs fosters acceptance and positive interactions for everyone.
- Plan Ahead for Travel
Airports and airplanes can be very overstimulating. Pack snacks, activities, and comfort items to support your child on their journey. You may also want to practice aspects of flying at home such as sitting in a row of chairs, wearing a seatbelt, or listening to airplane sounds. Communicate with airline staff if you need pre-boarding or extra support.
- Remember to Follow Your Child’s Lead
Holidays don’t have to look the same for every family. It’s okay to skip certain events or leave early if it helps your child stay regulated and happy. Focus on creating positive, low-stress experiences that work for your unique family.
✨ We hope you and your family enjoy the Holiday Season! ✨

Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace
Health Coverage Support for Oregon Families
Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace wants to help families find affordable, low- or no-cost health coverage that meets their needs. Many children and adults qualify for free health care through OHP Plus or OHP Bridge, which cover:
- Vaccines and immunizations
- Wellness and preventive check-ups
- Pregnancy and newborn care
- Mental health and substance use treatment
- Prescription medications
- Reproductive health services
These services are free when you qualify for OHP. If your family does not qualify, there are still options—Marketplace health plans are available, and many families receive financial assistance to lower monthly costs.
Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace’s goal is to support and educate families who have questions about health coverage. Although nearly 140,000 Oregonians are already enrolled in private insurance, many still remain uninsured. The Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace is here to help make the process easier and ensure families get the care they deserve.
The next open enrollment period is November 1, 2025 – January 15, 2026. This is the best time to apply for financial assistance and enroll in a 2026 health plan through the Marketplace.
