Science of Reading, Science of Teaching, and Data-Based Decision Making

Jan. 16 - Hillsboro (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)

Students at Vernonia Elementary School enjoy books in the library. All four have received reading interventions as part of a system-wide shift to science of reading instruction.

Pre-K through fifth grade teachers, literacy coaches and specialists and other reading-focused educators are invited to join us for our second of four science of reading workshops this school year.

The event will be held at our Washington Service Center in Hillsboro. We can reimburse your district for substitute costs and mileage. The event is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, and lunch will be provided. Participants do not need to attend all sessions to participate in the series.  

Our instructional coaches will cover: 

• Science of reading knowledge building
• Scarborough’s Reading Rope: decoding and sight recognition
• Active engagement and instructional routines
• Benchmark assessments
  
  

Equity Events

Our Equity and Family Partnerships team offers workshops, series, book clubs, affinity groups, equity onboarding and student-led summits throughout the year. We hope you can join us. 

• Racial Equity Affinity Group is a monthly affinity opportunity for educators of color. The next meeting is 4-5:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 at our Beaverton Early Childhood Center. 
• Liberatory Design: Mindsets and Modes is March 5 on Zoom 
• Cascade Alliance for Equity Spring Summit is tentatively set for May 3 in Seaside

Teaching and Learning Events

Our coaches, professional learning specialists and teachers on special assignments lead nearly 20 programs geared specifically to your content area and level. We offer workshops, training series, on-site coaching and yearlong collaboratives in MtSS, literacy, instructional coaching, mentoring, positive behavior supports, attendance, social emotional systems and more. 

• Regional Mentoring Program Virtual Forum is Jan. 13 on Zoom
• Integrated Guidance: Developing Interim Measures and Review Processes is Jan. 17 on Zoom
• 9th Grade Success Network Workshops are hosted locally in Washington County as well as the coast for high school teams with the next session open in February
• Save the Date: Artificial Intelligence Empowered Education Conference will be May 13 at the University of Portland. 
• Interested in presenting? Submit your workshop proposal by Jan. 31.

Culture and Climate Events

• Youth Mental Health First Aid is Jan. 23 in Hillsboro
• Behavior, Attendance and Social Emotional Systems professional learning sessions hosted throughout the year

The last session in our Individual Education Program (IEP) Foundations Series takes place this month. Explore the recordings from previous sessions in October, November, and December.

• Transition IEP Workshop & Transition: Community Partner Collaboration are both on Jan. 9 in Hillsboro. You can attend both to have a full day of learning! 
• IEP Foundations: Determining Specially Designed Instruction, Services, & Placement is Jan. 14 in Hillsboro or Jan. 28 on Zoom
• Growing Student Independence for Special Education Paraprofessionals is Jan. 23 on Zoom
