Starting with our January events, and in an effort to serve you better, the following changes
have been made to our website training calendar and PDNetworks (the site where you register for training).
● When you view the training calendar on our website, you will actually be viewing the
PDNetworks training calendar. Every event that you see from the CCRR page will be
training that we are hosting or delivering. All of these will give you ORO credit. Click on
the event that you want to register for and it will take you directly to the PDNetworks
login and then to that specific event, so that you can sign up
● From the Weekly Wire or Newsletter, links will no longer take you to the website. They
will instead take you directly to the PDNetworks login and then to that specific event, so
that you can sign up
● For professionals from outside the counties of Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook, our
training will now be open for a limited number of participants for a small fee. If you are
from our counties and you are asked to pay for anything other than First Aid/CPR,
please contact our team, we can help you to register for free.
Finally and most excitingly, the Tech and Communications teams from the NW Regional
Education Service District will be conducting a Listening Session on February 11th at 6:00pm. They want to hear from you about your experience using PDNetworks. Feedback will be used to help us improve the system that you are accessing to sign up for training. We hope that you will attend. You can register for this event by completing the registration form below.

Provider Spotlight - Katie Drew
Katie Drew has always had a natural love for caring for children and started out as a babysitter. In 2004, Katie attended the Northwest Nannies Institute. After gaining hands-on experience as a nanny for ten years, she spent time working in childcare centers, which prepared her for the next big step: opening her own in-home childcare.
One of the most rewarding parts of the job, she shares, is witnessing each child’s growth and development. “Many of them start with me around 18 months and stay until kindergarten.” Watching them change, learn, and develop so much over that time is inspiring. I also always say the best part of childcare is that every day is different. You never know what kids will say or do. They keep you on your toes.”
The role isn’t without its challenges. For Katie, the business side of childcare has always been tricky. Additionally, it can be tough when she sees a child who needs extra support, that has not yet been recognized.
When asked to describe her philosophy on early learning, she explained that it all comes down to seeing each child as an individual. “I believe that every child is different and needs something different. It is my job as a provider to figure out how to best help all children in my care.”
Looking back, a memorable time that stands out for Katie: seeing the first child she ever cared for head off to kindergarten. “He is autistic, and we worked hard for him to be ready to go”
Reflecting on the future of childcare, Katie acknowledges some uncertainty. With concerns about low enrollment causing closures, she hopes society will come to see the immense value of in-home care, especially for children who may thrive better in smaller, personalized settings.
Now, four years after opening her program, in order to serve more children in her community, Katie is transitioning her business from a registered family home to a certified family home. Katie felt her time as a registered family care provider has given her the experience to take on the additional responsibility of becoming a Certified family care Provider.
As for her own future, Katie is excited to keep learning and growing. Katie hopes to continue running a successful childcare business. With ongoing education and professional development, she aims to provide the best possible care for every child.

Katie Drew siempre tuvo un amor natural por el cuidado de los niños y empezó como niñera. En 2004, Katie asistió al Instituto de Niñeras del Noroeste (Northwest Nannies Institute). How a caring teacher can make or break school for young students
“When a small child tells you they love you, say it back to them!” said the veteran Castro Valley Unified teacher. “They need to know you care. Imagine telling someone, “I love you,” and all you hear back is, “Thank you,” or “OK.” How would that make you feel versus being told, “I love you, too?” If you don’t want to be that specific, you can also say, “I love all of you too.”
Merrigan knows that caring is just as important as the curriculum when it comes to small children. Unless they feel nurtured, they may well struggle to learn.
“It is so important for every child to feel that their teacher truly cares about them, that school is always a safe place to be,” said Merrigan, who also serves on the National Education Association’s (NEA) board of directors for California. “If they don’t make that connection with their teacher, it can impact their learning. When they know you truly care about them, they want to do their best for you, because they are seeking your approval. If they think you don’t care, they don’t care.”

Communicating with Parents and Caregivers Around Routines
Caring for children requires teamwork — and parents, family, friends, and neighbors are all valuable members of that team. When your team works together to communicate with honesty and respect, you build stronger relationships, can better provide for little ones, and make your job more comfortable, fun, and fulfilling.
Here are some actionable tips to communicate respectfully and positively, especially around routines.
• Collaboration is key. Work with parents and other caregivers (and children) to choose a routine or skill to work on both at home and in childcare. Share ideas about how you might both support the child and ask parents and other caregivers for their perspectives as well. You might ask what their goals and expectations are for their child's learning and growth. Remember that there are many right ways to do the same thing, and you are a team! Your collective support will mean so much and make such a big difference to the child.
• Lead with the positive. When talking about a child with a parent or other caregiver, lead with the positive. Even if a child has had a hard day, find something positive to say first, and build on that.
• Find various ways to communicate. As important as it is to communicate with families, it may be challenging to find face-to-face time to talk every day, especially if you have multiple children in your care. Written communications (like this Communication Log) are great tools to use. You might also consider sending emails or text messages or finding time for a quick phone call to check in. Ask parents and other caregivers what works best for them.
• You're in this together! Remember that your team shares a commitment to the children! Keeping that and other shared values top of mind can help everyone navigate differences respectfully. Disagreements might happen, but that's okay. Finding ways to compromise helps build teamwork.
Cómo hablar con los padres y cuidadores acerca de las rutinas
El cuidado de los niños requiere de un trabajo en equipo. Usted, los padres y cuidadores son parte importante de ese equipo. Cuando su equipo trabaja como una unidad para hablar con los niños con honestidad y respeto se crean relaciones más fuertes, se les da una mejor atención a los niños y el trabajo se hace más fácil, divertido y gratificante.
