Marion County is aware of a sustained winter weather event that will likely begin Friday in higher elevation communities, like Detroit and Idanha, and Sunday county-wide. Elevations above 1,500 feet are projected to receive more than 2’ of snow accumulation from Friday through Tuesday. The valley floor may receive up to 4” of snow accumulation from Sunday through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
If you live at an elevation that could potentially face snowy conditions, it is important to make preparations BEFORE the snow arrives:
- Sign up for Marion Polk Alerts to receive emergency notifications.
- Make sure you have an emergency kit ready.
- Stock up on food and any needed supplies before snow accumulation begins.
- Ensure vehicles and generators have enough fuel and are in working order.
- Make sure phones and other devices are charged and that supplemental battery packs are also charged or on hand.
- Check in on vulnerable populations both before and during the winter event to ensure they are safe and prepared.
- Snow and cold weather are expected to persist for a week or more. Make sure you have adequate supplies to see you through.
We will share any additional information as it becomes available over the course of the winter event. As always, stay safe out there!
