History Gateway Strategic Plan
In 2005, the Oregon Legislature passed HJR32, calling for a location for a history center in the Capitol. With Senate Bills 961 and 1019 in 2009, the Oregon State Legislature dedicated resources, to be generated through the sales of the Pacific Wonderland license plate, to fund a history center at the State Capitol. The Legislature tasked the Oregon State Capitol Foundation with the responsibility to steward the license plate sales and funds in services to the planning and development of the History Center.
As a result of the inclusive community engagement, the strategic framework of mission, vision, values and strategic goals were carefully crafted to guide current and future development of Oregon's History Gateway at the Capitol. (Read the Executive Summary of the Strategic Plan.) The strategic framework becomes the foundation to guide what will be done, and not done, to fulfill the legislative imperative.

Thank You
With involvement from participants interested and engaged in the project, the strategic plan for Oregon's History Gateway at the Capitol was developed through a collaborative research and planning process. As we move into implementation, the planning team, and expert consultants commissioned to produce the elements outlined in Phase One, will continue to work within a collaborative process, while seeking continued input from this community.

History Gateway Phase One
The Phase One, two-year plan includes: (1) an annual exhibit, (2) a State Capitol online resource website, (3) a Visitor Pathway through the building, and (4) a physical Visitor Welcome Center. One of the first steps is to develop the interpretive plan that outlines the stories and messages that will be told.

Display Case Upgrade Project
Prior to the upgrade, the majority of the exhibits have been quality information boards only, due to restrictions set by the current display case environment and security. Anticipating future opportunities to display artifacts, and in consultation with Oregon History Museum's curator, Marsha Matthews, the cases received a facelift last fall. The project included a lighting upgrade to LED and new case linings. The cases are now designed with flexibility to showcase 4 to 16 window exhibits and includes a smooth or slate back wall option. UV protection was added, along with motion sensors. Funding for the upgrade was made possible through the sale of Pacific Wonderland license plate revenue.
