Dear Friends,
As we approach America's 250th anniversary, it’s a powerful moment to reflect on the enduring principles that founded our nation and the bright path ahead. I still remember the 1976 Bicentennial when I was just a kid. Our entire town was decked out in red, white, and blue, with the “Spirit of ’76” everywhere you looked. Parades, fireworks, and community gatherings filled my small hometown and the state with pride and patriotism. It was a time when we celebrated not just our history, but the shared values of liberty, self-governance, and opportunity that define us as Oregonians and as Americans.
Fifty years later, a lot has changed—though I personally haven’t gotten a day older! Our country has faced new challenges and divisions that can sometimes test our unity. Yet at our core, we remain the United States—one nation, bound by the revolutionary ideas set forth in 1776. The freedoms we enjoy—speech, worship, assembly, and the pursuit of happiness—are not guaranteed by any government but are gifts from our Creator, protected by our Constitution.
I am truly blessed to live and serve in House District 23, one of the most beautiful places in our state, with some of the most generous people and great communities. It is an honor to represent all of you in Salem as we move forward together to make Oregon a great place to live and work.
Let’s use this 250th celebration to recommit ourselves to the founding ideals that unite us, bridge our differences, and build an even stronger future for our children and grandchildren. Together, we can ensure that the next 250 years are filled with the same spirit, resilience, and hope that have always defined us.
Below are some of the 4th of July and American 250 celebrations going on around House District 23. I hope you have a chance to attend one of these events and celebrate all that we have to be grateful for as Oregonians and Americans.
