Legislative Update from State Rep. Anna Scharf

Dear Friends,

I hope your summer is off to a great start! Mine is in overdrive with harvest starting on the farm and of course Legislative Days, but I will get to that in a minute…First and foremost, congratulations to the graduates in House District 23, which includes:

• Dallas High School
• Dayton High School
• Falls City High School
• Newberg High School
• Perrydale High School
• Western Christian High School

Also, a special shout out to Perrydale High School for their 100% graduation rate that was noted in a recent OPB article! I hope all the HD 23 graduates have a great summer and best wishes in your future endeavors!

Congratulations as well to all the parents in HD 23 who have kids who graduated college this year. I can’t believe my youngest child just graduated Suma Cum Lade at Eastern Oregon University with a double major, in just three years, and is headed right back in the Fall to start her master’s program. Super proud parent…I wonder if she could share some of her energy with me!

Also, a big shout out to all the amazing dads in HD 23. I hope you had a wonderful Father’s Day and were showered with love from your family. I was lucky enough to see my dad over the weekend as well as my father-in-law. I am reminded often of how lucky I am to still have them in my life. My husband, sort of took Sunday off, so we will call it ½ of a Father’s Day for him… but that’s just how things go on the farm when harvest is hitting fast and furious. 

I just finished Legislative Days at the Capitol, where committees met and legislators received brief agency updates. My committee topics covered everything from the Paid Leave Oregon Program to updates about the SNAP program changes related to HR1, and drought response across the state. In addition, I added a new committee to my schedule, The Joint Committee on Oregon - Ireland Sister State. I am the Representative from the House and was appointed to the committee by the Speaker. The Senate is Represented by Senator Manning (D- Eugene). The rest of the committee is made up of community members appointed by the Governor. I am excited about the possibilities for the committee and honored that the Speaker appointed me out of all 60 members.

Throughout the next six months, before the 2027 Legislative Session starts, we will have Legislative Days in September and December. During those days, we will get a better idea of what agency budgets might look like and a glimpse of what legislators are proposing for legislation. In addition, December will bring new committee assignments and possibly a change in the committees themselves, so stay tuned. 

 I want to bring to your attention the upcoming event at the Capitol: 

America's 250th
Saturday, June 27th 
10am-2pm

*This is a unique and free event*

Commemorate the 250th anniversary of the USA! "Passports" will be handed out to visitors with 13 stops inside and outside the Capitol. Stamps at each one of the 13 historical stops will be provided and a commemorative souvenir will be given to those who complete their passport!

I hope you get a chance to stop by and participate in this very cool event! The Willamette Valley Pie Co. has donated samples of their apple pie for this event along with vanilla ice cream donated by the Tillamook Creamery.
