Matter Industries - Reducing Plastic Pollution
I had a great meeting this week with the team from Matter Industries, a company tackling microplastic pollution head-on with impressive filtration technology for washing machine systems. They shared insights on their self-cleaning microfibre filter already launched in Europe across 11 markets, and they're looking to bring it to the US next. Every wash cycle releases millions of microfibres into our waterways. The technology to stop it at the source exists and it's commercially viable. Oregon has a real chance to lead here.
Thank you to Adam Root and Anthony Kolanko for making the trip and for the evidence-based work you're doing to support legislation like this around the world. I'm proud of my record taking on plastic pollution in Oregon with my team and other wonderful champions for the environment and public health like Environment Oregon, Surfrider Foundation, OSPIRG, Ocean Conservancy and Oceana.
NCSL Pathways for Higher Returns
Some of the exciting work we get the opportunity to do is learning from, and alongside legislators in other states. Thank you to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) for bringing together legislators from 13 different states in Bozeman, Montana last week to collaborate at the Career Pathways for Higher Returns Meeting. Topics included: How states define ROI in education and workforce investments; Connections between secondary education and workforce systems; Pathways exploration related to short-term credentials, community college and apprenticeships; Data Collection (Texas is impressive); Navigating Workforce Pell opportunities. There was so much packed into the one and a half short days.

Meetings in Senate District 15
This week I met with constituents, advocates and groups I work with in the legislature. We discussed a range of topics such as how to advocate and work with others to pass good policy; Adult foster homes, policy mandates and declining workforce concerns; Updates on Oregon's Extended Producer Responsibility bill; Healthcare costs and coverage issues. It was a busy and productive week.

Forest Grove High School - Hygiene Products Donations
Forest Grove High School's food pantry services the high school families in need. Especially with the increase in ICE activity in Forest Grove/Cornelius and the fact that FGSD is a title 1 school district (meaning a majority of the families in FGSD qualify for free or reduced lunch) means that many families are left vulnerable throughout the year and especially during the months of no school.
While the food pantry is partnered with the Oregon Food Bank and receives food donations frequently, the pantry lacks hygiene products such as toilet paper and soap. If you're willing and able, we'd really appreciate it if you could donate products by purchasing something off of our wishlist. This makes it easy for you to send and us to receive donations without worrying about delivery logistics.

HSD Communications Officer Selected as Oregon’s School Communicator of the Year

Congratulations are in order for our very own HSD Communications Officer, Beth Graser, for being selected as Oregon’s School Communicator of the Year (ospra.org/News/13623694) by the Oregon School Public Relations Association. She was one of just 28 school communications professionals to be considered for the National School Communicator of the Year Award (https://tinyurl.com/bd9rp9fn) and will be recognized along with the other nominees at the National School Public Relations Annual Conference in July.

 Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
