Week Two in Review - 2026 Session

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As of today, we are halfway through this short session. To date, SB 1527, a committee bill in the Senate Health Care Committee that eliminates co-pays for diagnostic testing for cervical cancer, has passed the Senate unanimously and is currently under consideration in the House. SB 1576A, one of my two priority bills, which expands access to housing suitable for people with mobility issues, is scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor this week.  Another of my priority bills, SB 1575, which updates hospice licensure to prevent fraud and abuse, has passed out of committee and is awaiting scheduling on the Senate floor later this week.

In the Senate Finance and Revenue Committee, we discussed closing corporate tax loopholes from the changes in H.R. 1, which primarily benefit the country’s largest companies. SB 1507 keeps no tax on tips and overtime, expands the Oregon Earned Income Tax Credit, and creates a new tax credit for new jobs in our state. SB 1507 passed the Senate on Monday, February 16th, and now moves to the House for further consideration.

I’m grateful to have the opportunity to hear from healthcare providers, public health experts, education leaders, and economic development advocates. There is much work ahead, but together, we are making real progress.

I look forward to staying in touch with you. Many thanks!

Sincerely yours,
Deb

Connecting with Oregonians at the State Capitol

Community members from all across Oregon have been meeting with legislators about the issues they care about. Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with folks advocating for cancer prevention, higher education, affordable housing, immigrant justice, and more.

Making Meaningful Progress

My priorities this year are focused on health care, housing, hunger, and human rights. Last week, the Senate advanced two of my bills to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for cervical cancer screening and build more wheelchair-accessible homes.

Thank you to all the advocates who have helped us make meaningful progress for Oregonians!

Remembering Avel Louise Gordly

This week, the Oregon Senate lost an icon – the Honorable Avel Louise Gordly, who was the first Black woman to serve in the Oregon State Senate. Appointed to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1991, she was elected to the Senate five years later, serving from 1997 to 2009. Senator Gordly was a champion of civil rights and social justice, educational reform, and mental health services. She left an indelible mark on our State and will be missed.

You can read more about her life in this OPB article.
