Out and About in Senate District 15

ODHS Visits, Grinch Readings and Small Business Shopping

Over the last week and a half, I have had the opportunity to visit our local Hillsboro DHS office several times. First, I went for a listen and learning tour, speaking with staff and learning about the programs and support that Oregon DHS offer for foster youth, their families and caregivers.

Last Friday evening, I went back to volunteer with Project Never Again as we wrote personal courage cards and packed gift bags for foster youth. The support of volunteers and donors from this event will impact 92 teenagers currently moving through foster care.

On Monday, I attended the Washington County Child Welfare Holiday Party for Kids in Care. What joy it was to read a Grinchy tale at an amazing Christmas party for kids in foster care and their families! Thank you volunteers and Oregon Dept of Human Services Child Welfare for bringing smiles, food, families, and fun to so many today. The room was full of happy chaos. Just Create Community was also there with books for all.

This past week, I also shared my Grinch reading at Indian Hills Elementary School and the Hillsboro Brookwood Library. It brings me such joy to see so many smiling faces and excitement for the holidays.

Finally, I did a little local shopping in downtown Hillsboro, getting some last minute gifts and treats at the Collective Market.

Hillsboro Youth Speech & Debate Program

On Sunday, I was honored to talk to students from the Hillsboro Youth Speech & Debate Program. My topic was how to intentionally make a connection with the audience through your eyes and attention. I loved their questions and comments.

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
