Effects of ICE Actions on Students
There has always been a level of vague fear for teenagers going out of the house. However, many kids and families in our community are genuinely terrified right now. ICE presence has rapidly increased throughout Oregon, detaining legal residents and citizens without arrest warrants. This atmosphere of fear denies large numbers of kids and teens the right to go to school and feel safe. To leave their houses without worrying about being racially profiled by federal agents.
One incident in particular gives extreme cause for alarm. Last month, a 17 year old student at McMinnville High School was arrested off campus during lunch. He was released back to his family after being confirmed as a US citizen, though ICE agents threatened him and broke his car window during the arrest, a certainly traumatizing ordeal.
In a statement released by the Department of Homeland Security, the student was arrested for attempting to barricade ICE vehicles with his and other trucks. Regardless of their reasons for arrest, it is horrifying that they would arrest a minor. That they would arrest a high school student.
Schools and communities are now facing the insurmountable challenge of protecting students as they try to learn. Some districts have even formed neighborhood ICE watches. Every student deserves a safe environment to learn, though sadly that environment does not exist for everyone right now.

In The News
Oregonians have five weeks to secure expiring federal home energy tax credits, Oregon Capital Chronicle, Alex Baumhardt, November 24, 2025.
Oregonians have less than a month to take advantage of federal tax credits meant to reduce by thousands of dollars the costs of buying and installing new energy efficient heating and cooling pumps, insulation, windows and solar panels.
Paired with incentives from the nonprofit, state-partnered Energy Trust of Oregon, the savings can cover half to nearly all costs, depending on the purchase. People who have made home energy efficiency upgrades this year, or who can complete upgrades by Dec. 31, can claim the federal tax credits.
Oregon seeks companies to build out electric vehicle fast-charging stations on five major roadways, OPB, Monica Samayoa, December 4, 2025.
Oregon is hoping to add at least 200 public fast-charging electric vehicle chargers on some of the state’s major highways by the end of next year.
But first, the state is seeking applications from companies that will build and maintain the charging stations.

Washington County Chamber 2025 Awards Gala
This week, I was honored to receive the 2025 Business Champion award from the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. This incredible recognition means so much to me as a large part of my work in the legislature has been about cradle to career workforce development and education, supporting good paying jobs for Oregonians and promoting our small businesses.
Business is at the heart of what keeps Oregon thriving. Oregon is a beautiful state to explore, a great place to live and we want to keep it that way, but we need to make sure Oregon is also a great place to work and to do business. I look forward to continuing the work ahead.

Washington County Peace Center Tour
The Family Justice Center of Washington County is becoming The Washington County Peace Center, serving Oregonians in their most dire times. Having domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and more survivor wrap-around services under one roof is a win for Oregonians and a one-of-a-kind center. Earlier this week, I joined fellow Washington County legislators as we toured and saw the progress being made towards completion.

Be good to yourself and each other. ❤
Onward & Upward,
Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
