Friends and Neighbors,
We have made it to June! In this final month of session, I am reflecting on my first session as a state representative and am struck with gratitude for my colleagues and constituents for the incredible work that has gotten us to this point.
While last month’s revenue forecast painted a challenging picture of the road ahead, I remain steadfast in my commitment to improving the lives of Oregonians by addressing affordability, livability, and public safety. I am especially focused on these issues in light of the continued chaos of the federal government and the devastating cuts being considered in Congress. Here in Oregon, we are doing everything we can to protect Oregonians from the impacts of any cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other programs.
As always, please reach out to my office with any questions or for assistance with a state agency. We are also able to help connect you with your congressional delegation for assistance with federal matters.

Happy Pride Month HD 33! I am committed to supporting, protecting, and honoring the LGBTQ+ community that makes our state and our city so great.
While the Portland Pride parade will happen in July, there are plenty of ways to celebrate our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors this June right here in HD 33!

Happy Juneteenth, HD 33! Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last remaining enslaved Americans were finally informed of the end of the Civil War and of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth to commemorate the liberation of enslaved people in the United States and honor the resilience of Black Americans.
Juneteenth is an opportunity to celebrate how far we've come and reflect on how far we have to go.
I invite you to join Portland's Clara Peoples Freedom Trail Parade down Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, followed by the Juneteenth Festival in Lillis Albina Park - both on June 21st! The festival will have guest speakers, stage performers, live music entertainment, vendors, exhibits, and children’s activities.
SB 874
SB 874, which I had the honor of carrying on the floor, has just passed the House, meaning that it now awaits the Governor’s signature to become a law. This bill changes the term “Oriental medicine” as it is currently found in the Oregon Medical Practice Act to the more culturally appropriate term “Traditional Eastern Medicine.” This is an important change that reflects robust stakeholder engagement between the Oregon Medical Board, Oregon Acupuncturists Association, and APANO. I am so glad to see this bill move forward in the legislative process with updated, culturally appropriate language.
SB 610
SB 610 has also passed both the House and Senate! SB 610 modifies the administration of the Behavioral Health Resource Network (BHRN) grant program to make the Oversight and Accountability Council (OAC) an advisory body to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). This will streamline all of these programs to best serve Oregonians that use it. I look forward to watching its progress as it completes its last stage of the legislative process.
HB 2741
I am pleased to announce that SB 2741 has been signed by the Governor, completing its legislative journey and enshrining it into law. SB 2741 directs OHA to maintain a state public health laboratory and to implement and administer newborn bloodspot screening programs. This bill offers so much promise to the health and safety of the youngest Oregonians and I am excited to see how the passage of this legislation will benefit Oregon’s public health.
HB 2556
HB 2556 was recently signed by the Governor, officially designating Portland State University as Oregon's Urban Research University. Founded in 1946, PSU was the first publicly supported institution of higher learning in Portland. Since then, PSU has been a key partner for Portland and Oregon’s economy. Today, PSU breathes life into downtown Portland, bringing students, faculty, and staff from around the country and the world to Portland’s urban core. This designation will bolster PSU’s reputation and make the university more competitive in pursuit of grant funding for research at a critical time. Go Vikings!

Portland's annual Bloom Tour runs until June 8th throughout Downtown Portland and features floral art installations, events, and storefront displays to celebrate spring and our amazing Downtown small businesses. The opening ceremony included a speech from Mayor Keith Wilson recognizing the progress that Downtown Portland has made towards its foot traffic, public safety, and small business goals. The event also included a runway show exhibiting stunning floral artistry and creativity. Find more details about the Bloom Tour, including a map of the exhibits, here!
Exciting news! One of Portland’s best restaurants, Lilia Comedor, is coming to HD 33. This high profile restaurant opened almost three years ago, debuting as one of the city’s best new restaurants and last year appears on the Oregonian’s guide to Portland’s 40 best restaurants. Now, Lilia Comedor is moving from the South Waterfront to the North Park Blocks
The restaurant is named after Chef Juan Gomez’s late mother, Lilia, and is self-described as “Pacific Northwest cuisine through the lens of a Mexican American chef.” Chef Gomez is committed to hyper seasonality and locally sourced ingredients (including the flowers used to garnish dishes which are grown in his wife, Sam’s, garden). The menu also features a curated wine list featuring BIPOC, Women, and LGBTQ+ winemakers.
