Friends and Neighbors,
It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of Senator Woods’ passing. Senator Woods was a dedicated public servant who was elected to represent Senate District 13 in 2023 after service in the U.S. Army and a successful career in the private sector. I am deeply saddened that his time was cut short, yet so grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside such a steadfast leader. His integrity, pragmatism, and unique perspective will be sorely missed and his absence is already palpable in the halls of the Capitol. My condolences are with his family at this time.
You can read Senate Democrats’ and Governor Kotek’s reflections on Sen. Woods’ service and friendship here. Senators also shared moving statements on the floor that I encourage everyone to watch. I was honored to meet his family, who came to the Capitol for a reception celebrating his life where so many of his colleagues shared how their lives were touched by this great man.
Happy Mother’s Day, HD 33! In honor of our mothers and all the special women in our lives, I invite you to participate in Rose Haven’s annual Reigning Roses Walk through our district. All proceeds will benefit the women and children of Rose Haven, a day shelter and community center serving women, children and gender non-conforming folks experiencing the trauma of abuse, homelessness, and other disruptive life challenges. To learn more about this event, visit their website here.
Hoyt Arboretum Tour
What a beautiful Spring day at the Hoyt Arboretum! Located right here in HD 33, this living museum contains 190 acres of serene, wooded trails and over 6,000 tree and plant species. The Arboretum also leads a variety of educational programs, guided tours, and volunteer opportunities to give visitors a multitude of opportunities to further connect with this incredible space.
This session, the Arboretum is asking for $2 million from the Legislature to increase classroom nursery capacity, triple their greenhouse and nursery space, expand their accessible trails, build more bathrooms, and modernize the visitor center. These are essential upgrades to increase access to the Arboretum and I am hopeful that they will secure the funds to make this vision a reality. I am so grateful that Sugar and I had the opportunity to visit and I encourage you to do the same while everything is in bloom!
State of the City
Mayor Keith Wilson's State of the City address was incredibly refreshing. The optimism that he shared for the future of Portland is exactly what Portland needs right now. This vision for the future does not come without challenges along the way, and I understand that layoffs and fee increases throughout the city pose genuine difficulties for many Portland residents. That said, we must take steps to address a historic budget shortfall while "rebuilding trust with the public and proving we can deliver purpose and impact with every dollar we spend.” I have faith in Portland and in Mayor Wilson's vision for the future, and I look forward to working with the city to create a better Portland for us all. I was also thrilled to hear a shout out to the James Beard Public Market, which will be a key factor in bringing back a thriving Downtown Portland! You can watch his address yourself here.
With the record number of bills introduced this session, there’s an endless source of great ideas from legislators, committees, and advocates. Over the last few weeks, I signed onto additional bills that I want to share with you.
-
HB 2007, which establishes the Summer Learning Grant Program Fund, has passed both the House and Senate and was signed into law by Governor Kotek.
-
HB 2251, which directs school districts to adopt a policy that prohibits the use of student personal electronic devices, passed the House with bipartisan support. It must now pass out of the Senate Committee on Education before coming to the Senate floor for a vote..
-
HB 3100, which allocates lottery funds to the Oregon Business Development Department in order to develop a unified trade strategy for Oregon, has been referred to Ways and Means, where members will deliberate on its request for funding.
The federal REAL ID deadline is May 7. A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license, instruction permit or ID card that meets federal security requirements set by the REAL ID Act of 2005.
Starting May 7, anyone 18 years and older must present a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative – like a passport, passport card or military ID – to board a flight within the U.S. or access certain federal facilities.
While DMV offers many services online, you must get a REAL ID at a DMV office. You can make an appointment online or visit a DMV office near you without an appointment. You need to bring original documents that prove your identity, date of birth, home address (two different documents) and lawful status in the U.S. DMV offers a document guide to help you determine what to bring. You also have to provide your Social Security number or proof you are not eligible for one. Your current legal name must be on file with the Social Security Administration.
The REAL ID option costs an additional $30 above regular issuance fees every time you apply for an original, renewal or replacement driver’s license, permit or ID card. Learn more about REAL ID at Oregon.gov/REALID.

I am excited to welcome The Joinery furniture company’s showroom into HD 33’s Pearl District next month! The Joinery is a fantastic Portland-based company that creates handcrafted furniture that’s built to last. They plan to align their values of craftsmanship and longevity with the rich history of the Graphic Arts Building on NW 9th and Couch, which was also the former home of the beloved Pearl Bakery. I am looking forward to having them join the Pearl District’s robust selection of local businesses and make our community even greater.
