The Headline Says it All

This morning’s front page Oregonian article has a headline that says it all: “Lawmakers left with millions less to spend after dim forecast - Oregon lawmakers are grappling with the news that Trump tariffs mean they’ll have $750 less than previously expected to spend in the coming years.”

Yesterday, in Senate’s Finance and Revenue Committee, we heard Carl Riccadonna, State Economist, share the revenue forecast for Oregon’s next biennium. His analysis found that the State will likely have revenue of $37.4 billion during the 2027-29 biennium, an increase of $2 billion from the 23-25 biennium, but significantly less than expected based on March numbers. He stated that his estimate of the likelihood of a recession would be at about 25% but added that there is uncertainty around future actions at the federal level, particularly related to tariffs. In addition, the federal cuts Oregon may be facing to critical areas such as Medicaid, education, nutrition programs, and housing, add additional risk and will likely place additional pressure on the State budget.

My priorities in representing you remain unchanged – safe, strong, and thriving communities. I will continue to advocate for support for critical services, and join you in advocating for a stable, growing economy.

Understanding Local Transportation Needs

This year, the Legislature is developing a transportation package focused on safety and roadway maintenance. Over the past few weeks, I have been learning more about our local needs for road repairs in Senate District 10. I shared before some of the needs in Salem and Independence, and this week I want to share what I have learned about priorities in Monmouth.

Monmouth has identified several streets in need of repairs. These include Edwards Rd, Ackerman Street, Clay Street, Bentley Street, and Southgate Drive. There is also a need for sidewalk infill and replacement around Western Oregon University and Monmouth Elementary School.

I have heard from stakeholders that all of Oregon needs safe roads and timely maintenance for our roadways. I am looking forward to continuing these discussions and am grateful to our local government partners for their help.
