Over Half Way There!

We’ve passed the halfway mark of the legislative session, and the momentum is only building. Many of my priority bills are still moving forward, and there's still plenty of work ahead. I’m continuing to work diligently to advance the issues that matter most to our community.

Mourning the loss of Senator Aaron Woods

Senator Aaron Woods was a mentor and a friend. A decade ago, I choose to get active in the Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) as a way to channel my energy as the Obama administration wound down. Aaron Woods was one of the first to welcome me to the DPO. He taught me and encouraged me.... eventually he supported me in a run for Democratic Party Black Caucus Chair. I went on to win and served as Black Caucus Chairman for about a year.

Senator Aaron Woods

Over the last several years, Senator Woods and I would talk regularly. We would mainly chat about family, world events and policy. Often he would encourage me and tell me what a great job he thought I was doing. I'll miss his rumbling voice and wisdom.

Rest well, Senator Woods.

Welcoming Congressman Blumenauer back to the Capitol!

Welcoming Congressman

We had the pleasure of welcoming Congressman Blumenauer back to the House Chamber recently! He first joined the Oregon Legislature more than 50 years ago. Thank you to Representative Grayber for making this happen and Representative Neron for taking the photo!

Meeting with you all!

One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to meet with constituents and advocacy groups alike! Thank you to everyone for coming in to meet with me, and I always appreciate hearing from all of you!

In District Ride-along

In District RideAlong

I recently had the opportunity to ride along with Officer Kulp in District 44 as he patrolled the North Precinct and Bridgeton area. It was good to learn more about the work done in our district and I thank Officer Kulp for taking the time out of his day to show me around!

Columbia Boulevard Emergency Route in the Media

Map of the liquefaction zones in north portland and bridge locations

North Portland is vulnerable when the "big one" or another similar disaster hits and we had a public hearing Monday on HB 2749 to change that.

This bill puts $5M toward designing a resilient Columbia Blvd. bridge, which is a critical first step to unlock federal funds.

Thanks to the advocacy on this bill, we got some great media coverage of the issue. You can read those news stories here:

Cascade Aids Project Art Auction

I had a great time at my first Cascade AIDS Project Auction as a member of the board on April 5th!

With all of the cuts and uncertainty coming from Trump and Elon Musk, it's more important than ever that people come together to support organizations like CAP.

Chair Affair Event

The annual gala hosted by the Community Warehouse is the only nonprofit furniture bank serving the Portland metro area. Community Warehouse provides essential furniture and household goods to individuals and families rebuilding their lives.

Research shows that recipients of this support are 40% more likely to remain stably housed and it is a powerful reminder of how something as simple as a bed or table can change lives. It was a joy to celebrate this impact and support an organization doing vital work in our community.

Hands Off PDX

Hands Off PDX Rep. Nelson

On April 5th, people all across the country took to the streets to protest the radical actions coming from Washington DC, President Trump, and Elon Musk.

We need to continue pushing back against the administration and let them know that we are not okay with any of this. It felt great to be amongst Portlanders who were standing up and telling the administration: Hands Off!

April 22nd, 2025 was Earth Day!

Earth Day

Earth Day is the time for us to focus on the wellbeing of our planet and realize that we all have to work together to address the climate crisis. We only have one planet that we all share, so we must protect it.

Here are just a few environmental bills that I am supporting this session:

SJR 28 - Amendment to the Oregon Constitution to establish a fundamental right to a clean, safe and healthy environment

HB 3365A - Teaching Climate Change in Schools

HB 2978A - Wildlife Corridors and updates to Wildlife-Vehicle Collision Program
