Legislating for the Future

Hi Friends,

As we get caught up in the day-to-day business and busy-ness of the Legislative session, at times it’s helpful to step back and take the long view. Who better to help do that than the community advocates who come to the Capitol to share their experiences, their expertise, and their vision for the future?

In the past few days, I had the chance to visit with a number of people working on a wide variety of issues. For example, the Oregon Audubon Council recently came by to talk about their legislative priorities on wildlife stewardship and more.  Students with Latinos Unidos Siempre shared their experiences with school, home, and family life and discussed priorities which would assist students and families. I met at a gathering of several dozen people from a variety of labor groups who were concerned about cuts to needed healthcare from the federal level. There are so many things that we are working on together, and they affect people now, in the near future, and for generations to come.

Groups that were met with photos.

When I vote in committee and on the floor of the Senate, I am not taking these votes lightly. I recognize that decisions we make today will affect people in the near future and often, far beyond. Sometimes, that is a no vote, as it was for bonding for a Portland baseball stadium today. And you will see me stand up to speak up for what I believe are injustices – both here and at the federal level.

Recently, I stated on the Senate floor, “In the name of protecting America’s interests, this administration is trampling the ideals we hold dear – ideals of due process, human rights, and the rule of law – for migrants, visitors, permanent residents, and citizens. And in doing so, it is doing irreparable harm to our country’s values, to our country’s global reputation, and to growing numbers of human lives.” To listen to my full remarks, click here.

Thank you for sharing your insights and perspectives with me. Together, we can move forward in caring for Oregon – for now, and for the years to come.

Best regards,

Deb
