Policy in Bloom
I’m excited to share an update on what’s happening at the Capitol and in our community. Through the long days and record number of bills this session, your voices continue to guide the work. Here’s what we’ve been up to!
Senator Margaret Carter Speaks to the House Chamber
We had the honor of welcoming former Senator Margaret Carter to the Capitol. She is an icon of service and the first Black woman elected to the Oregon Legislature. Her legacy reminds us of the power of perseverance and people-centered leadership. Without Representative Carter, there may never have been a Representative Nelson.
Legislative Progress: Bills Still Alive
Bills that have PASSED in the House Chamber (Now in Senate Committee):
Bills that came out of a policy committee and headed to Joint Ways and Means:
Bills that are scheduled for work session:
Bills that are not subject to timelines:
Constituents in the Capitol
Thank you to everyone who’s reached out, visited and came to see me! Your energy fuels my work.
St. Johns Community Center
Senator Frederick and I submitted a letter urging the City of Portland to reconsider proposed closures of neighborhood community centers, including St. Johns and Peninsula Park. These centers are vital for families, youth, and neighborhood resilience. Read the full letter here.
Portland International Raceway Update
We’ve heard from many of you about your concerns and hopes related to Portland International Raceway. From the beginning, my office has been committed to ensuring this conversation remains centered, transparent, and focused on long-term livability and shared use of the space.
As you may know, I introduced HB 2738 legislation to phase out the use of leaded fuel at PIR and have worked tirelessly to advance that effort. Despite our hard work and many conversations, meetings, and moments of real momentum, we were not able to get it across the finish line this session.
But that doesn’t mean the work ends here. I encourage you to keep advocating. This is a city-level issue, and your voices will be critical in shaping what comes next. The conversation isn’t over, it’s just moved to a different room. I will also be ensuring I am in that room advocating as well.
League of Minority Voters 2025 Liberty and Hope Award
Receiving this award was an incredible honor! I first ran for office because I wanted to be a voice for my community, workers, the marginalized and the poor. It’s been nearly 4 years since I made the decision to run for state office and I know now, more than ever, that I’m making a difference.
Thanks to Promise King & the League of Minority Voters for recognizing the work and for lifting up the voices of people who’ve had their voices suppressed far too often.
WeShine and St. Andrews Episcopal Church Establish New Community in North Portland
I was happy to be on hand for the opening of the WeShine Village at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. We must continue to support a wide range of affordable & transitional housing options.
This new village includes 10 individual shelter units and is designed to help transition individuals from tents into permanent housing. Located on the grounds of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, the site will be fully fenced, staffed, and supported through a strong partnership with the church. With its structured, community-based approach, this model is expected to be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. You can learn more about it here.
North by Northeast's Annnual Community Supper!
I had an amazing time attending the annual N by NE Community Supper. The North by Northeast Community Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center focused on improving the health and wellbeing of Black Oregonians. This is an annual opportunity to tell stories, celebrate accomplishments and share the vision for the coming years.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Jackson Armory
I had the opportunity to attend a special event marking the completion of a $9.4 million renovation of the local armory. The updates will enhance the armory’s ability to serve the Oregon National Guard and strengthen its role in community engagement. It was a proud moment for Oregon and House District 44 for a meaningful investment in both infrastructure and community connection
Safeguarding Oregon Forum
Oregon AG Dan Rayfield is marking his first 100 days with a special guest: Arizona AG Kris Mayes. Join them for a powerful discussion on federal oversight and protecting our communities.
When: April 10 at 6 PM
Where: University Place Hotel, Portland at the Columbia Falls Ballroom
Final Note
The session is busy, but we’re staying grounded in community. Whether you’re advocating for a bill, attending a town hall, or simply reading along—thank you. I’m proud to represent this district, and I’m always here to listen.
