Leg update

Friends,

This session, I’ve been actively opposing legislation that threatens the livelihoods of hardworking Oregonians and the small businesses that form the backbone of our communities. Two such bills, one aimed at imposing heavy-handed regulations on agriculture and another against home-based care providers, would create unnecessary bureaucracies, drive out small businesses, and limit access to essential services. These proposals prioritize control over collaboration, and the consequences would be devastating for both industries and the people they serve. I remain committed to standing up for practical, responsible solutions that protect Oregon’s workers, businesses, and most vulnerable residents. Thank you for staying engaged and making your voices heard.

HB2548: Burdening Farmers, Driving Jobs Overseas, and Threatening Oregon Agriculture

If you force factory style labor standards on family farms, you’re going to end up with factory farms.

Charles Ortiz, a farm owner and agronomist, opposes HB 2548, arguing it imposes redundant regulations that harm Oregon's agricultural industry. He emphasizes that farmers care deeply for their employees and that additional bureaucracy will burden small and emerging farms, making it harder to compete with out-of-state and foreign producers. Ortiz warns that the bill could lead to job losses, undermine local agriculture, and fail to address the exploitation it aims to prevent. He urges lawmakers to reject the bill to protect Oregon's agricultural economy and workforce.

Standing Against HB 3838: Protecting Small Businesses and Essential Care Services

I strongly opposed a bill that threatens the mission of home and community-based care providers. While investment in our care workforce is essential, creating another unelected bureaucracy would harm nonprofit providers, burden small businesses, and reduce the availability of critical services for Oregon’s most vulnerable residents.

Instead of imposing new regulatory barriers, we should focus on practical solutions like increasing Medicaid reimbursement rates, offering recruitment incentives, and reducing administrative burdens. These measures will strengthen the care workforce without jeopardizing providers or the people they serve. Thank you to everyone who has spoken up to protect these vital services. Together, we can work toward real solutions for our community.
