Rep. Wright presented HB 3444 for equity in funding for public charter schools.
Equal funding for public charter schools is important because charter schools provide high-quality, innovative education to Oregon’s students. Charter schools' function much like the regular public schools and are open to all students and adhere to state and federal regulations and do not charge tuition or fees. But receive less than half the financial resources to those in district-run schools. Oregon public charter schools receive just 48 cents on the dollar compared to district-run schools.
Public charter schools have authority to operate under a contract (charter) between the members of the charter school community and the local board of education, which are the sponsor.
Oregon has 133 charter public schools that serve approximately 43,000 students. Charter school can be attended in-person or on-line. Public charter schools MUST meet Oregon state academic standards, as all other schools in Oregon. Oregon public charter schools operate under a separate legal entity and a binding agreement with the local board of education allowing them to make more independent decisions for students.
Facts about Oregon Charter schools:
- Charter schools in Oregon are public schools operated by a group of parents, teachers, and/or community members as a semi-autonomous school of choice within a school district.
- Charter schools must meet Oregon state academic standards, the same as any other school.
- Oregon passed charter school legislation in 1999, and today, families can choose from more than 130 charter schools for their students.
- During the pandemic, enrollment in online charter schools skyrocketed and interest remains strong, with many charters now having a waiting list.
