Policy Spotlight

SB 779 - AgriStress Helpline

The AgriStress Helpline is a free, 24/7 crisis hotline for Oregon’s agricultural and forestry communities, including farmers, ranchers, fishermen, foresters, and their families. The helpline was a bipartisan, bicameral effort, created by SB 955 in the 2023 session. SB 779 will establish an endowment for the helpline to use for self-funding going forward.

Tragically, in the United States, suicide rates among farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers are almost 58% higher than any other occupation, and in Oregon, we have the 17th highest suicide rate in the US. Key factors contributing to these preventable deaths include financial losses, chronic illness, work-life imbalance, societal stigmas, and the physical and social barriers to access mental health services.

The creation of the AgriStress Helpline has greatly impacted and improved many Oregonians lives. This is a critical need that enables our rural communities to seek mental health services that meets them where they are, without the need to travel long distances to receive basic care. Bill would ban flavored tobacco, local shops say they’re not addressing the problem

ABC 12 KDRV, Rocky Walker, March 9, 2025

“The number one reason that I'm here today to support senate bill 702 is simply for our kids,” said District 15 Representative and bill sponsor Janeen Sollman,” We should not be attracting our youth with fruity flavors… to become addicted to a product that would cause lasting harm to their health.”

Sollman said in 2019 the Oregon Health Authority estimated one in four eleventh graders in the state were using tobacco products, she continued that in Washington County, where her district resides, had estimates of 75% use by eleventh graders."

KPIC 4, Sana Aljobory,

"The bill's supporters highlighted the links between forced child marriages and human trafficking. A study showed that 83% of underage marriages involved girls marrying men about four years older.

Sen. Sollman urged her colleagues to support the bill, saying, "Senate Bill 548 is a bipartisan and bicameral solution to help protect children of Oregon, and I urge an aye vote."

Oregon Senate passes bill to ban single-use plastic checkout bags statewide

KATU 2, Vasili Varlamos,

Oregon Capitol Chronical, Julia Shumway, March 11, 2025

"Sen. Janeen Sollman, the Hillsboro Democrat behind the bill, said it will be good for the environment and for businesses that will save money by buying fewer plastic goods.

“I want to be clear, this is not a ban on all plastic, but a mere drop in the plastic deluge of products we encounter every day,” Sollman said. “If we can do a bill that saves business dollars along the way, that is a win.”

Community Outreach

Oregon Summer Star

Summer Star

Do you know a military-impacted family? Since 2006, Tsuga’s Oregon Summer Star has served as Oregon’s only community for youth and families of Active-duty, Guard, Reserve, and Veteran service-members. Our annual overnight summer camp is one of the few places military-impacted youth ages 7–17 can connect with kids who share their specific strengths and struggles.

OSS delivers wrap-around programming with themes of emotional resilience, community-building, outdoor education, and most importantly, classic summer camp fun. After a week-long respite for both child and caregiver, campers come back relaxed, energized, with a stronger sense of self and new friends who just “get it” in ways others back home often can’t. Connected kids are resilient kids!

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
