Hello Friends,
Happy Black History Month, HD35! And happy belated 166th birthday, Oregon.
We hope folks stayed safe and warm during our snowy weekend. As always, resources for emergency shelters in HD35 can be found in our newsletter, on our socials, and on the Washington County Emergency Shelter page.
2025 Committee Assignments
As we see the rollback of federal initiatives to ensure the safety and prosperity of our Black neighbors, it is increasingly important that we fight for equity and justice on the local level. This upcoming week, I will be attending Oregon’s Black History: 450 years in 45 Minutes hosted by the Aloha Community Library and Oregon Black Pioneers. Oregon Black Pioneers is Oregon’s only historical society dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences of African Americans statewide. Like the rest of the country, Oregon’s history with civil rights and Black liberation is fraught with injustice, but it is also a story of the deep importance of community. I hope folks will consider attending one of the talks hosted by Oregon Black Pioneers this month to learn more about Black history in Oregon.

In light of recent news of unelected, non government officials gaining access to the private information of US citizens, it’s important that we are all equipped with the tools to protect ourselves from credit fraud and identity theft. If you have concerns that your personal information may have been compromised, you can freeze your credit, preventing creditors from accessing your credit report or creating new accounts in your name. You can find out how to freeze your credit here. Constituent services are also here to help folks access resources should you find your credit or identity compromised. You can reach us at: Rep.FarrahChaichi@oregonlegislature.gov, or 503.986.1435.
The Oregon Main Street Revitalization grant is a community improvement grant awarded to organizations that are working to bring business, events, and attractions to their local downtown area. Since 2017, towns and cities across Oregon have received funds from this program to improve ADA access, build housing, repair structures, and fill vacant buildings. During the 2023 session, the Oregon legislature approved $10 million for the program. Those funds will be awarded this Spring. If you’d like to learn more about the program or apply to receive funds for your organization to contribute to your downtown, you can visit the Oregon Heritage website. The deadline to apply is March 13th, 2025.
This past week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Mayor Beaty of Beaverton to hear about her administration’s plans for 2025. Ongoing collaboration with city and county leaders is of the utmost priority for my office as we continue to prepare legislation for the 2025 Session. I would encourage folks who are interested to attend the State of the City address on March 17th, 2025.
In 2023, it became legal for Oregonians to pump their own gas for the first time since the 50’s. In an effort to maintain the accessibility of gas stations, the law required that half of the pumps at a station remain full service. Unfortunately, since 2023, many gas stations no longer provide full service pumps. This presents a challenge to folks with disabilities that make it difficult or entirely impossible to pump their own gas. I am supporting disability rights groups in their call to the Oregon State Fire Marshall to enforce the law and ensure gas stations are offering full service gas pumps. We are asking folks who are impacted by this issue to consider attending the public hearing on February 20th, 2025.
Oregon AFSCME was in the building to discuss their legislative priorities for 2025. My team is committed to championing workers' rights.
