Oregon Legislature gets to work on budget, transportation and other issues
Oregon Capital Chronicle, Julia Shumway, Alex Baumhardt and Ben Botkin, January 21, 2025
Also published in the Lake Oswego Review and others
Senate Majority Leader Kayse Jama, D-Portland, said that lawmakers have done a lot in recent years to try to keep Oregonians from becoming homeless, help those who are homeless back into housing and help more Oregonians manage to buy homes. But there’s a lot more to do, he said.
“We have been underbuilding for decades, and we have to acknowledge that we’re trying to catch up,” Jama said
Oregon lawmakers head to Salem Tuesday to start the 2025 legislative session
Oregon Public Broadcasting, Lauren Dake, January 21, 2025
The start of the 2025 legislative session appears to be kicking off on a relatively harmonious note.
Lawmakers face a long list of daunting tasks this session; from passing the next two-year state budget to approving a multibillion-dollar transportation package to pushing for more accountability from state agencies. There are old wounds not far from the surface; the 2023 legislative walkout, the longest in state history, rendered 10 state senators ineligible to seek reelection
This is how to testify, submit testimony during the Oregon Legislature
Salem Statesman Journal, Dianne Lugo, January 23, 2025
Oregon lawmakers have filed more than 2,400 bills for the legislative session that got underway Tuesday. To advance, those proposals must be assigned to a committee and scheduled for a public hearing.
This is how Oregonians can submit written testimony on bills or sign up to speak during a public hearing.
Policy Spotlight
HB 3012: Relating to voting in school district elections
House bill 3012 is a bill that allows someone who is 16 or 17 years old and registered to vote to cast a ballot in their school district elections. I support this bill and proudly sponsor because I believe that youth voice matters and they should be able to have a say in voting for people who oversee policies that directly affect their lives. They share a perspective that should be listened to and valued. I have worked with many high school students in my office and have ALWAYS been completely impressed with their abilities, their passion and engagement. Thank you to Representative Courtney Neron for bringing this policy back in front of us again, and thank you to the Beaverton Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board for their support and advocacy to pass this bill in Oregon. Click here, or on the picture below, to watch a video made by Beaverton students.

Translators - A Community Event: Resilience in Focus
Last night was a beautiful night to be with community at Pacific University as we watched and discussed the movie, Translators. I enjoyed good food, music, movie, and conversation. Thank you U.S. Bank and Forest Grove/Cornelius Chamber of Commerce for hosting this important event. This is just the beginning, let's keep talking and building community.
MLK National Day of Service
Monday was a beautiful day to build community, as we honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I added positive messages in my yard today, volunteered with the Hillsboro Downtown Partnership with Mayor Beach Pace and Councilor Rob Harris, walked downtown with a merry band of neighbors brought together by Just Create Community and had a delicious lunch at Hillsboro Station Food Carts with friends who also volunteered today, including Hillsboro City Councilor Elizabeth Case.
'Know Your Rights" Community Training
Thank you Centro Cultural de Washington County for inviting me to speak at the "Know Your Rights" comunidad training on Sunday. It's important to come together to listen, learn and advocate. Regardless of immigration status, we ALL have guaranteed rights under the Constitution. Indeed, "together we can make a difference and build a more just future for all".
Community Conversation at Ava Roasteria in Orenco
Last Saturday, we had a great turnout of neighbors at my Community Conversation at the Orenco Ava's Roasteria. It is good to hear from the community about the issues most important to them. We talked about subjects ranging from changes at the National level to, education, housing, climate concerns, economic development, and more. We covered a lot in 1 hour! Please feel free to join us at a future event. All are welcome.

Be good to yourself and each other. ❤
Onward & Upward,
Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
