Beyond the News

The headlines this week included the commemoration of the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as stories about the Presidential inauguration, winter storms in the southwest, fires in California, and the ceasefire in Gaza, among others. Vastly different approaches to addressing human needs, environmental concerns and an equal playing field for participation in the economy have been on full display.

In contrast, what doesn’t make the news, is the collaboration that takes place in so many places. This past week, during the opening of the 83rd biennium of the Oregon State Legislature, both sides of the aisle have worked hard to work together to begin the important work that faces us and that impact Oregonians across the state – healthcare, housing, jobs, transportation, childcare, educational opportunities and more. I’m honored to work with my colleagues, legislative and office staff, agency representatives, and other advocates to represent constituents in this Senate District to ensure that Oregon works for everyone.

This week, in Senate Healthcare, we had an informational meeting on the need for more healthcare workers – nearly 230,000 by 2032. In Senate Housing, we had an overview of housing needs for affordable and middle housing, and an overview of progress and challenges in addressing homelessness. In Early Childhood and Behavioral Health, we heard about the needs for more affordable childcare, and more mental health services. And in Finance in Revenue, we had a primer on topics to be covered this session.

In addition, I had the opportunity to testify in support of SB 452, which would provide needed support to the Marion-Polk Food Share and help them move into a larger facility to meet the growing needs of the communities they serve, which are now at historic levels. I attended the ribbon cutting for a family shelter opened by ARCHES here in Salem, and retirement receptions for the Mayor of Independence, John McArdle, and the Director of the Center for Hope and Safety, Jayne Downing, both of whom had decades-long tenures of incredible contributions to the common good.

Most of the good work that happens in our world is collaborative, and inclusive, and values the voices of others. It is usually beyond the news, but it is happening now and always. I’m grateful to be a part of this work, with you. Please stay in touch as we work together for the good of all.

Sincerely yours,

Deb

Honoring our Oregon Firefighters

I wanted to extend my appreciation to nearly 400 Oregon firefighters who have mobilized to California, to aid in combating the devastating Palisades wildfires. The selflessness, and resilience that these people have, not only saves lives, but fosters security and hope to those affected be these disasters.

Thank you, Oregon firefighters, for your heroism and commitment to keeping our neighbors safe. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, but rather, are inspiring to all of us back home, and we stand with you every step of the way. Thank you for your service.

Thank you Oregon Firefighters

Senate Bill 452: Funding for Marion Polk Food Share

These folks showed up yesterday to testify in support of SB 452, which would provide funding to help Marion Polk Food Share move into a larger facility to meet historic need. Thank you also to Reps Andersen and Mannix, and Senators Thatcher and Weber, who also testified in support.

Resources to Help you Stay Warm and Healthy This Winter

As winter settles in and temperatures start to drop, it is important to have the resources needed to stay warm and healthy. The State of Oregon has created a guide aimed to help Oregonians to do so during these colder months. Click here to access the resources they have put together. In addition, the Oregon Health Authority has released information on respiratory viruses. You can access said resource here.
