thanksgiving

Dear Friends,

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible communities of Southwest Oregon. This season reminds us to reflect on our blessings, and I am especially thankful for the opportunity to serve as your representative.

While we gather with loved ones and give thanks, I also want to remind you that Legislative Days are fast approaching, taking place from December 10-13. These meetings provide an important opportunity to discuss pressing issues and plan for the upcoming legislative session. I look forward to sharing my 2025 legislative agenda with you in a future newsletter.

Wishing you and your family a joyful and peaceful Thanksgiving.

Veterans Day Ceremony

I had the honor of speaking at the VFW Post 966 in Brookings on Veterans Day. They had a fantastic ceremony including a program outlined including a Flag retirement ceremony conducted by Scouts of America- Troop 32 honor Guard/Rifle Team and a gun salute. Topping it off was a flyover of F-15s out of the 173rd Fighter Wing from Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls. Thank you for your service!

Coos Bay S.T.E.P. Fisheries Fundraiser - BigFoot Stories

Senator Brock Smith and I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic evening with 65 passionate folks who love fishing and are committed to restoring our Salmon and Steelhead populations to abundance. Representatives from the Coquille Tribe were there, and I can't say enough about the incredible work they've done on the Coquille River—it’s truly inspiring.

The North Bend Lanes Dinner was fabulous, and I’m thrilled to share that we raised approximately $3,500 for Coos County S.T.E.P. projects. Of course, I couldn’t resist sharing one of my favorite Sasquatch stories from the Rogue River. It was a night to remember!

McMinnville Water Infrastructure Tour

As a member of the House Agriculture, Water, Land Use, and Natural Resources Committee, I consider it a vital part of my legislative duties to tackle the growing challenges around water. Each year, water becomes an even more pressing issue, with approximately 150 rural Oregon communities needing significant upgrades to their water and wastewater systems. I'm committed to learning everything I can to make the best decisions and support these communities in need.

The insights gained during the McMinnville tour were invaluable and absolutely worth my time. Senator Brock Smith joined me for the day and asked some excellent, pointed questions that added to the discussion.

Oregon Rural Broadband Support Awards

It was an incredible honor to travel to Bend and receive such a prestigious award. Coos-Curry Electric and the Beacon Broadband team have done an outstanding job bringing rural broadband fiber to our schools, hospitals, veterans, families, and seniors. This achievement is the most significant support system for our region since they first brought electric power to the South Coast in the 1930s.

It’s a great day to be an Oregonian and a proud citizen of Coos and Curry Counties. Go CCEC and Beacon!

Category #4:   Excellence in Telecommunications Policy and Legislation Individual or organization that has participated in writing and advocating for legislation that will have a significant impact on telecommunications in Oregon. Legislator or elected representative that has effectively introduced or advocated for innovation in legislation or policy that has positively impacted access, reliability, and/or affordability of telecommunications services, or promotes and accelerates adoption and utilization of telecommunications services in Oregon.

Awardee:  Oregon State Senator David Brock Smith

Senator Smith’s groundbreaking contributions to telecommunications policy have remarkably transformed the landscape of high-speed internet access in rural Oregon.

The pivotal role he played in introducing and passing Oregon Revised Statute 758.120 has been a game-changer for the state. This crucial legislation empowered electrical cooperatives to leverage their existing infrastructure to deploy broadband services. His visionary approach enabled the extension of high-speed fiber optic broadband to some of Oregon’s most remote and underserved communities, particularly in Coos and Curry counties.

Thanks to his unwavering dedication, over 3,800 constituents now enjoy fast, reliable, and affordable internet provided by Beacon Broadband. This achievement is a testament to his commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that rural areas have equal access to modern telecommunications services.

Senator Smith’s efforts go beyond legislative achievements. He has been an outspoken advocate for the citizens of Southwestern Oregon, working tirelessly to eliminate the disparities in internet access between rural and urban areas like Portland, Eugene, and Salem. His engagement has been multifaceted—ranging from writing influential letters of support to the Oregon Broadband Deployment Program, to actively participating in town hall meetings with residents of soon-to-be-served areas.

The impact of his work is profound. By fostering the deployment of broadband technology, Senator Smith has catalyzed significant economic, educational, and social benefits for the communities he serves.

In conclusion, State Senator David Brock Smith embodies the spirit of excellence in telecommunications policy and legislation.

This significant achievement has profoundly impacted the economic, educational, and social well-being of these rural areas.

Without Representative Boice’s legislative and personal support, the citizens of Coos and Curry counties would likely still be grappling with the disparity of high-speed internet access compared to more urban areas like Portland, Eugene, and Salem. His long-standing residency and advocacy for Southwestern Oregon have been pivotal in securing the necessary resources and attention to address this critical issue.

The successful deployment of high-speed fiber optic broadband in Coos and Curry counties has yielded numerous benefits.
