NW Oregon Legislative Fellowship (NWOLF)

This week I was proud to chair the Mock Committee as part of the final policy presentation for Representative Ben Bowman's NW Oregon Legislative Fellowship (NWOLF). It was such an uplifting experience to hear from these passionate students as they made the case for policy solutions to problems like Firearm Safety Device Requirement, Child Trafficking Reform Act and allowing adults in custody the ability to give bone marrow donations. The future is bright with students like these leading the way.

Washington County Chamber Annual Manufacturers Symposium

On Wednesday, I participated as a panel member in the 2024 Manufacturers Symposium, themed Oregon’s Manufacturing Horizon: Shaping the Future with Policy, Development, and Talent. The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and educators to explore the evolving landscape of manufacturing in Oregon. We focused on key issues such as legislative developments, economic growth opportunities, and workforce innovation, offering insights into how policy, technological advancements, and talent cultivation are driving the future of manufacturing in the region.

At the conclusion of our panel discussion, Senator Ron Wyden joined us for some Q&A about how the federal government is partnering in this effort, especially with the recent passage of the Federal CHIPS Act. Along with the Oregon CHIPS Act, many business across Oregon have benefitted from resources provided by these groundbreaking legislative initiatives.

Pamper Day Event for Survivors of Domestic Violence

Last weekend I was honored to speak at the Salvation Army Hillsboro Hope Center 'Pamper Day' for survivors of domestic violence. It was an emotional morning of listening to the personal stories of survivors. I am thankful that The Family Justice Center of Washington County was there to be a resource of hope and thrilled to see all the pampering of survivors. Thank you to my fellow panel members, Debra Dority from the Oregon Law Center and Family Justice Center Executive Director, Rachel Schutz.

Reading with Students

I had a great start to my morning last Friday when I was able to read to students in Mrs. Una Maher's Hillsboro Online Academy Kindergarten & 1st grade class. Their smiles made my day!

Reading to children helps foster literacy and a love of reading. Consider volunteering an hour of your time reading to local students. SMART Reading is looking for volunteers. Learn more at the article linked below.

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
