Washington County Community Developmental Disability Program
This week, Team SD 15 visited the Washington County Community Development Disability Program (CDDP). One of the main responsibilities of the CDDPs is to provide case management services to individuals who experience an Intellectual or Developmental Disability (I/DD). During the tour, we heard from CDDP staff about how this system operates on a daily basis, and about the state's funding structure of these programs. Washington County's program has experienced exponential growth in the last decade and is the 3rd largest CDDP in Oregon. They currently support over 3,000 individuals with case management services. The team at Washington County's CDDP is passionate about their work and dedicated to serving their clients needs, from language and culturally specific services, to outreach and education, and connecting clients to critical resources, it was great to hear from them first hand and see case management in action.

Forest Grove - Annual City Safety Open House
Thank you to Forest Grove Fire & Rescue for hosting an Open House last weekend. Kids can't be what they can't see. It was awesome to see Fire, Forest Grove Police, Forest Grove Light & Power, Forest Grove Parks & Recreation Department and Public Works on hand for demonstrations and fun. I even got to go up in the bucket!

Nihon Hidankyo
The infamous atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th in 1945 still leave a huge mark in today’s society. The people that lived through these bombings still suffer horrible consequences from the event, from injuries and radiation poisoning to grappling with the loss of their loved ones. These survivors are known as Hibakusha in Japanese.
Nihon Hidankyo is a grassroots Japanese foundation of survivors that has made it their mission to amplify the voices of Hibakusha in order to advocate for a nuclear weapon free world. They share survivor testimonies with the world to show how important it is that nuclear weapons never be used again. Nihon Hidankyo also advocates for social rights and economic compensation for Hibakusha.
Nihon Hidakyo was recently awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.” Now, more than ever, it is essential that world leaders understand the horrible effects that nuclear weapons have on the world so that we never relive what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Sugar Forks | All Science. No Fiction. OPB Video Series, October 16, 2024
Single-use plastics are an environmental nightmare, but researchers at Boise State University have developed a new material they think could help solve the problem. It’s made of sugar, with other plant-based materials added for strength. The result is a substance that is biodegradable, easily recyclable, and can be sourced almost entirely in the Pacific Northwest.

Capital Assistance for Local Farmers Resources
Shared from Friends of Family Farmers
As part of our continuing CALF series, we wanted to start showcasing resources that are relevant for capital access. If you’re a farmer interested in any capital access resources, you can always visit our resource website and check out different grant and loan opportunities. We’re going to start posting resources including opportunities for farmers to apply for different grants and loans. As you check out the resource website, we wanted to highlight a current capital resource farmers can apply for.
USDA’s FSA is hosting a cost-share opportunity for farmers looking to get organic certified. Applications are due October 31st and this opportunity helps cover the cost of farmers looking to get organic certified. The institution issuing the organic certification has to be a USDA body to qualify for this cost-share. Cost-share programs can be a really cost effective way to conduct operational costs for an organic small scale farmer.
Check out the opportunity here: https://www.fsa.usda.gov/programs-and.../occsp/index...

November 8th is National STEM Day!
Shared from Portland Metro STEM Partnership
Celebrate all things science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with STEM Bites. Oregon’s regional STEM Hubs are coming together to bring engaging, hands-on science and engineering learning ideas to educators across the state!
Hands-on science can be challenging to do and STEM Bites are designed to help. Each “Bite” can be done at home, in a classroom, or in a program space. Bites primarily use simple materials that classrooms and families already have or can readily acquire. The STEM Bites are organized by grade band (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6). The collection includes explorations of our environment, engineering challenges, science investigations, observations and more! (Text Source: STEM Bites website)

Be good to yourself and each other. ❤
Onward & Upward,
Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
