CSG Henry Toll Fellowship

The Toll Fellowship Program, named for CSG founder Henry Wolcott Toll, is one of the nation’s premier leadership development programs for state government officials. Each year, the program brings a select group of the nation’s top officials from all three branches of state government to Lexington, Kentucky, for an intensive five-day “leadership boot camp.” The program’s sessions are designed to stimulate personal assessment and growth, while providing priceless networking and relationship-building opportunities.

I am honored to be selected as a 2024 CSG Henry Toll Fellow and this week I am traveling to Lexington, Kentucky to take part in the program. I am excited to share what I learn with you in an upcoming newsletter. Find more information on the CSG Henry Toll Fellowship here, and see the list of this year's class, including my colleague from Oregon, Representative Lisa Reynolds!

Arte de la Pinta

Last weekend I attended Arte de la Pinta at Centro Cultural de Washington County. The event showcased art created by incarcerated individuals and highlighted such amazing talent.

"This event is a celebration of creativity, Indigenous and Chicano culture, and community," says Lorelei Ruiz, owner of Brown Sueños.

This event is made possible through the Centro Cultural Artist Residency Program and a generous grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council. It was Ruiz that saw the need for this event to represent and celebrate community. She was frustrated waiting for it to happen and was the incredible force that saw this through.

Last weekend I discovered this Hillsboro Police Department Press Release. My heart aches for the 26 year old victim of Mr. Hauser in this story. I want to say thank you to the individuals that reported concern and thank you to HPD for their action. Friends have mentioned this young man that would sell drinks alongside the road, would often have positive messages on signs and was very friendly and appreciative, rain or shine. They spoke kindly of him and were perplexed by his roadside situation. I think this story is a critical reminder that there are dark people in the world doing harm to others, such as Mr. Hauser was doing to his victim. Mr. Hauser took advantage of the situation for his own personal greed and sickness. It is hard to believe the disgusting facts in this case. Human trafficking is usually thought of in the sex trades, not situations such as this, where you have a 26 year old person with good intentions to serve the community, being taken advantage of in the most serious way. Sometimes in those brief sightings or interactions, negative thoughts come too easily to people’s minds, such as the need for that person to get a job or that they must be feeding their addiction disease. We must consider that not everyone’s struggles are able to be fixed with simple solutions. This story struck me as to the importance of human interaction and kindness and the importance of having a Crisis Intervention Team at HPD to help make more community connections and help those in need. I hope that this young man is receiving the help and support that he needs now and very much deserves. Mr. Hauser will have to answer to his actions through our courts and criminal justice system.

Learn how to recognize the signs of human trafficking.

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
