Join me at Bagley Park in Hillsboro tomorrow, July 13th at 10:00 am, for a Community Conversation. Come share your thoughts and questions and meet fellow community members. Just a couple of blocks away, stop by the Hillsboro Farmer's Market to do some local small business shopping while you are out. I look forward to seeing you there.

Listen.Learn.Act.

This week Team SD 15 is attending the CSG (Council of State Governments) West Conference in Portland. I am also honored to be participating as the co-chair of the event. This is the first time in 20 years that the annual conference has been held in Oregon. With nearly 600 attendees from across the western region, here to learn from each other and see the best that Oregon has to offer, it has truly been a spectacular week. We were visited by Oregon Governor, Kate Brown and enjoyed many learning sessions on topics ranging from housing, to public safety, sustainable aviation fuel, plastic pollution, EPR, Oregon's Bottle Bill, and artificial intelligence. I participated on several panels including WestTrends, the Fentanyl Crisis, Finding and Fine-Tuning your Leadership Style, and Right to Repair. Former Senate President, Peter Courtney was honored this year with the Bettye Fahrenkamp Award for excellence in leadership. I am grateful for this opportunity to learn from each other and make new connections.

Dtocs - Sustainable Tableware

Collage

Dtocs is a local small business (based just outside of Senate District 15) that provides eco-conscious dinnerware made from naturally shed Areca palm leaves. I was thrilled to learn about this environmentally friendly business at CSG West this week. Visit Dtocs website here for further information and purchasing.

**Reconstruction of Lahaina, Maui: Reviving a Historic Jewel**

The reconstruction of Lahaina, Maui, represents a remarkable effort to restore one of Hawaii's most historic and culturally significant towns. Lahaina, once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom and a bustling whaling village in the 19th century, has always been a hub of cultural, economic, and social activity.

In recent years, the town faced significant challenges, including natural disasters and the pressures of modernization. Efforts to rebuild Lahaina are focused on preserving its rich heritage while accommodating contemporary needs. Key to this reconstruction is the restoration of historic sites, such as the iconic Lahaina Banyan Tree, one of the largest of its kind in the United States, and the Baldwin House, which offers insights into 19th-century missionary life.

Community involvement is central to the reconstruction efforts. Local residents, historians, and cultural experts are collaborating to ensure that the town's unique history is honored. Sustainable building practices are being employed to create structures that are resilient to future natural disasters while maintaining the town's historic aesthetic.

Economic revitalization is also a priority. The reconstruction aims to boost local businesses and tourism, vital components of Lahaina's economy. This includes enhancing infrastructure, such as roads and utilities, to support both residents and visitors.

The reconstruction of Lahaina is more than just a physical rebuilding; it is a renewal of spirit. It embodies a commitment to preserving the past while fostering a vibrant future. As Lahaina rises from its challenges, it stands as a testament to the resilience and cultural richness of Maui.

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
