Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope this message finds you well and you’ve been enjoying the sunshine! My office has been staying busy this action-packed month of June. There’s a lot to share so follow this newsletter to learn more about what’s going on in the community, how you can get involved, and learn more about the services available to you.

Happy Fourth of July!

As we celebrate with our friends and family this week, please stay safe when using fireworks. With over 70% of fires in Oregon being human-caused, we have to take extra steps in wildfire prevention.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal is urging everyone to be mindful of the hot weather and increased wildfire risk. For families planning to use fireworks -

  • Be prepared before lighting fireworks: keep water available by using a garden hose or bucket.
  • Be safe when lighting fireworks: keep children and pets away from fireworks. Never use fireworks near or on dry grass or vegetation.
  • Be responsible after lighting fireworks: never relight a dud. Please wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water before disposal.
  • Be aware: use only legal fireworks in legal places.

If you’re looking for a safe way to celebrate the holiday, here are a few great events in the community -

June Around Town

Visiting the Hillsboro Community Action Center

community action

Thank you to Director Shuey and Cam at Community Action for giving me a tour of the facility and the opportunity to learn about the many essential programs and services that they provide - from family development, childcare, emergency housing assistance, and financial literacy.

With the effects of the pandemic and the hardships of the economy, Community Action has been key to ensuring families regain stability, and ultimately transforming lives. I am eager to partner with organizations like this that are doing the hard work of meeting the needs of our diverse communities more effectively and efficiently.

Community Action is a great resource that has been providing services since 1965. Today, they serve over 38,000 Washington County families and residents each year. If you or someone you know need immediate help or access to resources, visit the Community Action website to learn more about what is available.

Providence Nurses Strike

ONA strike

Oregon Nurses on Strike - Fighting for fair contracts

Last month, I stood alongside nurses at the picket lines for the largest nurses strike in Oregon history. There were more than 3,000 nurses across six facilities in the state. It was amazing to get the chance to meet and hear from nurses about their personal stories and the incredibly challenging work that they come to everyday.

Our nurses and frontline healthcare workers deserve respect, dignity, and safety for the hard work that they do. As a healthcare provider and legislator, I know that making sure that our nurses have strong contracts and working conditions will improve their ability to provide patient care and will make all the difference for our communities.

Cedar Rising - 81 New Affordable Units in Aloha

Last month, Hacienda CDC and Washington County celebrated the grand opening of Cedar Rising which will bring 82 affordable homes in Aloha.

Hacienda CDC will provide culturally specific onsite services to empower and foster housing stability among Latine and Asian residents and others. 33 of the apartments will be reserved for residents earning 30% of the area median income and the remaining units will serve those earning 60% of the area median income or less. We know that building affordable housing allows us to make real progress on the housing affordability crisis that are impacting communities - especially for our low-income and others who are most at-risk for housing insecurity.

Cooper Mountain Community Plan

Cooper Mountain is a 1,200-acre expansion area bordering Beaverton that will eventually be home to about 5,000 homes, more than 10,000 residents, parks, commercial areas, trees, and natural resources.

The Planning Commission will discuss refinements to Cooper Mountain draft development rules this summer. City staff are considering additional refinements to draft maps and draft development rules based on feedback from the community, City Council and Planning Commission.

Washington County Consolidated Plan Survey

As part of the community engagement process, Washington County, Beaverton, and Hillsboro have opened a community survey to assess housing and community development needs throughout the county. Survey results will help determine how federal resources are invested to address the highest priority needs. This survey has been translated into all of Washington County’s Safe Harbor Languages, and paper copies can be provided upon request.

Your answers will help our community know how to invest federal resources over the next five years. You can take the survey here

Community Survey for Disabled, Aging, and Veteran Services

Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services (DAVS) is conducting a survey to collect public input about the needs of veterans, people with physical disabilities and older adults (aged 55+) in our community. The survey is one part of a community needs assessment DAVS is undertaking to help identify gaps, leverage resources and prioritize services in their next strategic plan. For more information about the survey, call 503-846-3060.

Beaverton Transportation Plan Input

The plan aims to establish a climate-friendly and equitable transportation system, where people can safely, easily, and comfortably connect to the activities, places, and services that are important to them.

City staff are seeking volunteers to serve on the project’s Community Advisory Committee (CAC). Members of the committee will advise on and inform the update of the plan. Do you have interest in Beaverton’s local transportation system? Follow this link to learn more and get involved.
