May Legislative Days

Since our last newsletter, I was down in Salem for May Legislative Days to hear from our many agencies about the status of implementation of the policies we passed in 2024 and to get a better understanding of policies that we may see in 2025.

Dental Reimbursement Rates

As a pediatric dentist who has been serving the Washington County community for many years, one of the issues that I have been hearing come up has been around access to dental care and the increasing rising costs of services - especially for our families on the Oregon Health Plan or Oregon Medicaid. It’s a tricky situation where actuarial analysis of previous years of data will inform projections and calculations of future utilization and reimbursement rates for providers and our Dental Care Organizations.

I believe that we need to address gaps and shortages in dental care and I look forward to advocating for better oral health outcomes for children of color, rural, and low-income families.

If you’re interested in learning more about this issue, watch the committee meeting on dental rates below.

Revenue Forecast

Two weeks ago, the latest Revenue Forecast was released. We saw that the Oregon economy continues to grow and that based on the April personal income tax collections coming in higher than initially expected, it’s possible that Oregonians will receive a kicker tax credit in 2026. Our economy is stable and growing and with that, we’ll have critical funding for ongoing programs that so many Oregonians rely on.

You can read more about the forecast in this Capitol Chronicle article here.

In the Community

Nueva Esperanza Grand Opening

Nueva Esperanza, a project spearheaded by Bienestar and the City of Hillsboro, held their grand opening that adds 150 affordable housing units near Hidden Creek Park in east Hillsboro. This neighborhood is built to provide affordable housing for farmworkers, Latinx families, Somali immigrant families, and many more.

Hillsboro Affordable Housing

Esperanza means “hope” and is a key part of this apartment community as access to affordable housing will empower families to lay their roots in Hillsboro. This neighborhood incorporates cultural elements that meet the resident and family needs from things like boot washing stations for our agricultural workers and piñata hanging lines for birthdays and parties. It’s projects like these that are exciting to celebrate with the community.

Speaking with OHSU Dental Students

dental talk OHSU

I had a great opportunity to speak with the OHSU dental students about ways that they can engage as advocates. Civic engagement and participation is essential to making changes to our community and empowers individuals to help shape policies and decisions in our government. It's so important that we get youth and students involved and active to help shape our future.

Washington County Center for Addictions Triage and Treatment (CATT) Center Groundbreaking

ground breaking CATT center

We officially broke ground on a new addiction and treatment facility in Washington County! By fall 2025, these two new facilities in Hillsboro and Beaverton will provide seamless life-saving treatment and a number of critical wraparound services. I am so proud of our federal, state, local governments and the community for all making this project possible. You can read more about the ceremony here on KOIN.

District Resources
