In her recent book of essays, Lessons for Survival: Mothering Against “The Apocalypse,” Emily Raboteau, a young Black professional living in the Bronx, writes about teaching her children how to face many of the challenges our world presents. She guides them as best as she can through the pandemic, helps them to navigate racial undercurrents in America, and shares the grief of their grandfather dying with dementia. She also reaches out to other parents in places facing world-altering changes – such as Gaza and a melting Arctic community, looking for wisdom to help guide her in her quest.
One father she met was Denis Sheldon, who had been sent away from his family as a young native American child to live in a residential school. When she asked him how he and his fellow community members survived and dealt with their anger at the great losses they experienced, he said, “That’s easy...We take care of each other.”
We take care of each other. That’s what we try to do as we work together as Oregonians working on legislation that will improve the lives of others. I’m proud of what we accomplished earlier this year, and I look forward to what we can do together in the session ahead.
Please come and join me at my Town Hall this coming Wednesday, June 12th at 4:30 pm at Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library. I’m looking forward to talking with you as we forge the path forward for our district, our communities, and our Oregon.
All the best, Deb
Please join me for my Community Town Hall on June 12 to hear about my legislative priorities and share your perspective on the issues that matter to you. I hope to see you there!
