While we here in Oregon are enjoying the spring flowers that are sprouting up, there are signs that renewal is happening due to public policy and funding decisions planted earlier, as well.
For example, I was pleased to visit the open house of the Wallace Marine Early Learning Center in West Salem recently. I also had a chance to tour David’s House in Monmouth, run by the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency, which will open next month to serve teenagers who have become homeless.
Some of the staff and advisors at David's House, a home for unsheltered teens opening soon in Monmouth.
Last week, I was honored to participate in the groundbreaking for the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Willson Park on the Capitol Grounds. It was also great to take part earlier this week in the groundbreaking for a new city park in Independence – Sunset Meadows Park. Yesterday I attended the grand opening of the expansion of Liberty House serving northern Marion County. Next week, I’m looking forward to attending the groundbreaking for the new Sobering Center at Bridgeway in Salem.
Groundbreaking ceremony for the Vietnam War Memorial. Steve Bates, president of the Vietnam Memorial Fund, hopes the memorial will be completed in time for Veterans’ Day in November.
Much is happening, in partnership with governmental, foundation, and private funders. Beyond these things mentioned above, it is thrilling to see new housing springing up across Salem, and in Monmouth and Independence, and to see health and human service programs expanded.
Much work remains to be done, but I’m honored to work with you and so many others to see so many new things springing up to make our communities even better places to live – for all!
Gratefully,
Deb
Salem Keizer Public Schools
As you may know, Salem-Keizer teachers reached a tentative agreement with the school district on March 26, averting a potential strike. This means students were able to return to school after spring break and begin the new term on this week.
I am grateful to the teachers, staff, and School Board members who work hard to ensure that students in our District have the best possible educational opportunities. While the legislative funding commitment to public schools was the largest in Oregon’s history during this 82nd biennium, I pledge to work to improve resources for our public schools.
