Legislative Updates
The 82nd Legislative Session is officially sine die! We worked through the day yesterday to pass the remainder of the bills for the short session and ended last night. Please read below for a recap of the important work we did this session to address housing and homelessness, safe and healthy communities and strong schools and economy. I am so very thankful for the amazing SD15 Team, Nickole Vargas, Maria Gomez, Andrew Matto and Tayen Ledbetter. They serve our district well.
Senate Democrats Turn Oregon’s Shared Challenges into Shared Solutions in 2024 Session
Statement from Senate Majority Leader Kate Lieber on adjournment of the 2024 Legislative Session
March 7, 2024
SALEM, OR – Oregon’s 82nd Legislative Assembly adjourned the 2024 Legislative Session today having delivered major victories for the people of Oregon. This session, Senate Democrats worked to turn Oregon’s shared problems into shared solutions. Lawmakers prioritized taking action on the most urgent issues impacting all Oregonians: reducing homelessness, increasing affordable housing, improving public health and safety – including real solutions to the drug crisis – and strengthening our schools and the economy.
Senate Majority Leader Kate Lieber (D - Beaverton & SW Portland) issued the following statement on the major wins Senate Democrats delivered for the people of Oregon:
“Oregonians are the winners of this legislative session.
“I’m so proud of the job our caucus did this year, taking on our state’s toughest challenges to make a real, positive difference in peoples’ lives. I’m proud of the way we worked together, with our fellow Democrats and Republicans, to deliver meaningful progress Oregonians’ biggest priorities, including major investments in the homelessness and housing emergencies and common-sense solutions to the drug crisis.
“This responsibility is never easy, and we had to make some really hard decisions this session, but I’m confident that Oregon’s future is brighter because of the victories we secured for communities in every corner of our state.”
Senate Democrats’ 2024 Uniting Oregon Agenda focused on bringing people together to solve our state’s most pressing problems with the goal of making life better for all who call Oregon home. Legislation passed to accomplish this goal includes but is not limited to:

 Right to Repair Updates
SB 1596, the Right to Repair Act, passed out of the House on Monday with a bipartisan 42-13 vote!! It takes a village to work on important and impactful policy and I am tremendously proud of the collaboration and support from stakeholders and constituents to get this across the finish line. Oregon's Right to Repair Act is about saving Oregonians money and supporting small business growth in Oregon. It provides positive environmental action by reducing e-waste, cutting pollution by manufacturing less waste and creating an after-market inventory of products to close the digital divide across our state. Oregonians deserve to have affordable and sustainable options for repairing their electronics instead of throwing them away or replacing them.

Food and Housing Assistance
This week is SD15 Team Member Maria Gomez' last week with our office. Maria has been a member of my team since 2022 and before that, worked for Rep Barbara Smith Warner in the House. After sine die, Maria will be moving on to a new job with Washington County as a Public Affairs and Communications Coordinator, Bilingual in Spanish and English. Maria was instrumental during the 2023 session in supporting our office’s work on the Oregon Chips Act. She has followed along closely with the work of the Senate Housing Committee these past two sessions and worked on policy to better support Oregon veterans. She has also been our constituent outreach liaison during her time in our office and Senate District 15 constituents have been fortunate to have her empathy and care when looking into their issues. I am sad to see her go but know that she is moving on to do great things and Washington County is lucky to have her.

Be good to yourself and each other. ❤
Onward & Upward,
Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
