Legislative Update

Friends,

As the second week of the 2024 Legislative Session comes to a close, I wanted to provide a quick update on where we stand.

Key Deadlines

Because we are in a 35-day sprint, the legislative deadlines happen much sooner when compared to the long session. We have already passed the first key deadline:

Osborne - 2024 Legislative Session Deadlines

Status of House Bills

Since the February 12 deadline, 26 House bills are "dead". Of the 26, 16 were Republican bills, 8 were Democrat bills, and 2 were bipartisan.

Two Notable Bills of Concern

Several troubling bills have survived the first deadline and will be moving forward or are housed in a committee exempted from the deadlines:

  • HB 4080: Provides a roadmap for offshore wind; Business and Labor Republican committee members attempted to amend the bill the make it less concerning but were blocked;
  • HJR 201: Proposes a Constitutional amendment that would create a statewide property tax - harming those on fixed incomes.

Moving Forward

As the session progresses and we begin to receive Senate bills to consider, we will get a clearer picture of more bills of concern to watch out for and bills to support.

Sincerely,

Representative Virgle Osborne
House District 2
