Oregon Employment Department – Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Shared from the Oregon Employment Department

Some of you may have recently filed for unemployment insurance benefits. Unfortunately, call-wait times for the Unemployment Insurance program have been increasing over the last several weeks. Due to a lack of federal funding, the Oregon Employment Department doesn’t have enough people to keep up with the volume of calls it’s receiving. So, we encourage people to try other options before they call to save time and get the answers they need. This will free up the phone lines for people who have more complex problems or interpretation needs and allow staff to spend more time working on claims.

We understand how important it is to get the information you need, so here are some other options:

  • Online Claim System – This is the fastest, easiest way to check on the status of your claim. You don’t need to wait on hold when you can get quick answers with the Online Claim System, the department’s safe and secure website. You can use it to apply for benefits, file a weekly claim for benefits, restart your claim, and more.
  • Read your letters from the Employment Department – The department will send you letters with questions about your eligibility, instructions on how to maintain your eligibility, and what to do about any issues on your claim.
  • Contact Us form – There is an easy online method to quickly send the department a question or information. Use the Contact Us form to send a message quickly and securely without waiting on hold. It’s also available in Spanish, Russian, and Vietnamese. There is no need to send more than one Contact Us form, or “ticket,” or to call after you’ve submitted a ticket.

You can learn more about the Unemployment Insurance Program at unemployment.oregon.gov, by reading the Unemployment Insurance Claimant Handbook, or by listening to the handbook.

Oregon Civics Conference

Last Friday I had a wonderful time at the Civics Learning Project's Annual Oregon Civics Conference. I participated in an educator seminar facilitating a conversation with one of SD 15's former high school interns, Ceph Tronco. They really had so much to share about their experience as a youth advocate and activist. Their time as a student representative on the Hillsboro School Board was highlighted as well. Student voice matters!

Oregon League of Cities - North Star Award

On Tuesday evening, at the Hillsboro City Council meeting, I was presented with the Oregon League of Cities "North Star Award" for my work on the Oregon Chips Bill. It was an honor to receive this award from fellow public servants who understand that, ultimately, people – everyday Oregonians – must be our north star. I’m glad to have such dedicated partners in my mission to make a positive difference Oregonians will see and feel every day. Our investments in the semiconductor industry will benefit communities across the state by boosting demand up and down our local supply chain, increasing wages so more families can make ends meet and, in turn, support our local businesses, and produce the revenue we need to direct towards critical services like addiction treatment, public safety, and education.

You can watch the award presentation here at the December 5th meeting link, minute 47:40.

Light Up Hillsboro

Light Up Hillsboro! Last night we gathered in the Orenco Plaza to honor the beginning of Hanukkah and celebrate love, peace and light. Thank you to Chabad Jewish Center of Hillsboro, the City of Hillsboro and Hillsboro PD for providing a safe place to build community. There is much unrest and danger in the world and the people of the Middle East are currently facing a humanitarian crisis. Many of our Senate District 15 neighbors are hurting as they grieve and feel worry for family and friends being in harm’s way. It is important for us to support them with care and to find the light and hope for peace in the world.

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon's past and we must honor them well into our future.
