Visiting Summer School Programs around SD 15

This week I had the opportunity to visit a few summer camps in Forest Grove and Cornelius. It was amazing to see the engagement and relationships these organizations maintain with our community members. They are creating positive, enriching experiences for our children and exposing them to new opportunities!

Community Based Activity Program (CBAP) is a multi-service, non-profit organization that began in 1990 to address the needs of local students with disabilities during the summer months. Since then, the program has grown from 16 to over 160 students and welcomes children of all ability levels. Their mission is to provide a quality education that empowers and prepares all children to think, learn, play, and achieve success in our community.

FGSD Migrant Summer Program provides our migrant students with various learning opportunities. Students participate four days a week embracing instruction and going on site visits around our communities. This week some of the students were excited to go to the movie theaters, while others were excited to visit Forest Grove Aquatic Center's Splash Pad.

Centro Cultural Summer STEAM Program provides educational after-school and summer programs for Latinx youth in our community. Their program aims to supplement and reinforce what our youth learn in schools, while providing opportunities to explore new and exciting subjects. This week's program focused on the environment and high school students had the opportunity to go rafting, while 1st and 2nd grade students went to visit the Jackson Bottom Wetlands in Hillsboro.

Theatre in the Grove - Forest Grove, OR

In 1969, a creative group of friends with a desire to act pulled together a musical and performed it on a grade school stage. Forest Grove residents responded overwhelmingly and Theatre in the Grove was born.

Located at 2028 Pacific Ave, Forest Grove, OR 97116 - Theatre in the Grove is now one of Oregon’s oldest community theatres. They are celebrating over 50 years in the historic Star Theatre, which was built in 1912. Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon’s past and we must honor them well into our future.
