Clarification: Oregon’s Parental Rights: Going, going,…

State Rep. E. Werner Reschke

Friends,

I wanted to add some clarifying details to my email from yesterday, "Oregon's Parental Rights: Going, going..."

In my previous email I stated there was no age for consent to receive an abortion or for gender-altering care. That was partially correct. According to Section 8 of HB 2002 a minor can consent to receiving reproductive health care information and services — in other words an abortion.

For gender-altering care, however, the consent age remains at 15. To which I ask, why? Why is this not 18 or 21? Again gender-altering procedures are often life-long changes, and sometimes irreversible. Should 15 year olds be making such decisions without the knowledge of their parents?

In summary: HB 2002 allows a 10 year to receive an abortion in Oregon with no parental consent; the age of consent for gender-altering care remains 15 years old.

My goal is always to provide accurate information. Hopefully this will add clarity to my previous email.

Best regards,

Werner
