Meeting with Constituents from District 9 On Realtor Day

b

Realtors Day was a great day. I got to meet with a few of my constituents from Florence Oregon.

Kimberly Mandel, chair of the Oregon Substitute teachers in Coos Bay Oregon. Kim came to visit the Capitol and her representative. Currently Kimberly is teaching at the lighthouse school in Coos Bay Oregon.

It is always a pleasure to see and visit with Constituents of District 9.

Dear Friends,

The NUMBERS do not lie. I believe it would be detrimental to let HB 2005 pass. The majority of Oregonians want their 2nd amendment rights protected and upheld.

In preparation for the hearing of this bill, I was curious to see what the submitted testimony on OLIS looked like and to no one’s surprise the numbers came back with strong opposition. As of Tuesday April 11th, almost three fourths of the people from all around Oregon do not want this bill to go through.

Regretfully, I know that the Majority is held by Democrats that will prioritize the will of the almost but not quite 23% that supports House Bill 2005 and do as they want. I know that it is their intention to pass the bill as it is on the floor, if this was not the case, this bill would have died in committee as so many other bills have.

I understand that the people supporting this bill are concerned for themselves and their children’s safety, this is completely reasonable. To those in favor and worried about their children, yet when the opportunity arose to ensure safety through the work of multiple bills in the “Safer Schools” package, but the Democratic majority shut each and every bill down. It was and continues to be a great priority to me, as a retired educator, that our children are safe in schools. Keeping that in mind, a gun will not shoot itself; it is when someone decided to pick it up and aim that it becomes the thing people fear.

Colleagues, we were elected to these offices by the People. It is our job to make their voices heard and do right by them. Do not disregard our God-given 2nd Amendment rights. You cannot truly believe and say that you are doing your duty to Oregonians while you stand by and allow this bill to pass. Many people rely on a gun to keep themselves safe in this world that only seems to be getting more hectic. As many of my constituents pointed out “Gun free zones are just a red flag that everyone in them is a vulnerable, easy target”.

I will leave you with this, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” That is a direct line from the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Respectfully,

Representative Boomer Wright
