Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It was another packed week in the Capitol! Take a look at what transpired below.
-
House Committee on Higher Education: On Thursday, I testified in favor of HB 2802, a bill that would establish a pilot non-profit work-study program at Portland State University and Eastern Oregon University. This bill would provide discounted tuition for students that work at small, non-profits in their community. It’s a great way to help offset rising tuition, give students job skills in their chosen field of study, and help small non-profits that are experiencing a workforce shortage. I am so grateful to the students and nonprofit organizations that came to testify in support of the bill!
-
House Committee on Business and Labor: We reviewed several bills this week – including measures on out-of-state car dealers, vehicle sharing arrangements, workforce diversity, and the sale of dogs and cats at pet stores. We also received an important overview on apprenticeships from several perspectives - including the Bureau of Labor and Industries and Oregon Tradeswomen.
-
Joint Committee on Semiconductors: Congresswoman Bonamici spoke about the semiconductor industry in Oregon. In addition, we heard testimony on how investments in this industry would help our small businesses. The committee also began discussion on LC 4320 which would create an investment fund and land use flexibility for the governor to help Oregon semiconductor companies apply for federal grants from the CHIPS Act.
-
Joint Commitee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Transportation and Economic Development: The committee heard testimony from the Oregon Racing Commission and discussed financial assistance for our farms that are implementing farmworker overtime.
On Tuesday, I testified on two government reform bills before the House Committee on Emergency Management, General Government, and Veterans. HB 2805 would update and strengthen our open meetings laws while requiring training for most elected officials. HB 2806 would allow our public bodies to discuss cybersecurity matters and safety protocols in private.
Representative McLain, Senator Sollman, and I are hosting a joint virtual town hall this Saturday, February 18th, from 10:30 am-12 pm via Zoom. Spanish interpretation will be available. We'd love to see you there!
