Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It’s been a busy week down here in Salem. I’ve included some updates below.
-
House Committee on Business and Labor: on Monday, I testified in favor of HB 2800, which would clarify the definition of age discrimination in our state. This bill provides some guidance to Oregon employers as well as employees to ensure that everyone is on the same page. I am so grateful to the members of AARP who came to the capitol to show their support. On Wednesday, I testified in favor of HB 2801 which would prohibit auto dealers from changing the terms of a vehicle sale after the customer drives off the lot. This bill will go a long way toward protecting consumers from predatory sales tactics. My sincere thanks to the witnesses who shared their stories and experiences. -
House Committee on Higher Education: we heard moving testimony about the problem of student hunger on many of our campuses around Oregon. We also discussed eligibility requirements for part-time public university and community college faculty members seeking comprehensive benefit packages.
-
Joint Committee on Semiconductors: we further explored the evaluation of industrial land sites throughout the state. We also reviewed the strategic necessity of relocating microchip manufacturing to the U.S. given the geo-political threats to Taiwan.
-
Joint Commitee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Transportation and Economic Development: we received some great information from the Department of Transportation, the Department of Aviation, and the Oregon Real Estate Agency.
This week, I carried HB 2292 on the floor of the House. This bill would give consumers the right to rescind a landscaping contract within 3 days – unless the parties agree in writing that the work will begin within that three-day timeframe. This is the same protection that consumers currently enjoy when dealing with a construction contract or a door-to-door salesperson. This bill treats landscapers the same as similarly-situated businesses. It also safeguards consumers from high-pressure sales tactics. I’m happy to report that it passed with bipartisan support 42-15.
