Joint Semiconductor Committee

The Semiconductor Committee is laying a strong foundation for the "why us/why now" to take advantage of the CHIPS Act dollars from the federal government. On Monday, we heard recommendations for talent and workforce development in the semiconductor industry and recommendations for research and development in semiconductor. A great team was there to present from SD 15, including Jonath Colon from Centro Cultural, Assistant Superintendent Travis Reiman from the Hillsboro School District, and Kristi Wilson from the City of Hillsboro and PCC Board. Watch the hearing at this link here.

Senate Energy and Environment Committee

This week in the Senate Energy and Environment Committee, we heard from a panel of experts on Grid Security. This has been a hot topic we have heard about recently in the news and one that constituents have reached out on. A lot of good information was shared from experts in our utility industry. You can watch the hearing back here or click on the graphic below.

League of Cities Day

Wednesday was League of Cities Day at the Capitol. I met up with some fabulous local leaders- Cornelius Mayor, Jeff Dalin and City Manager, Peter Brandom came to the office for a visit. Hillsboro Mayor and LOC President, Steve Callaway and Tualatin City Councilor, Bridget Brooks stopped by to say Hello. I was also thrilled to see North Plains Mayor and Oregon Mayors' Association President, Teri Lenahan. All are strong advocates for their cities and constituents. ❤️

We are introducing a new section to our weekly newsletter this week featuring articles and information brought to us by our Senate District 15 interns. We hope to share a new article or two with you in each newsletter throughout session. Thank you, Anna, for kicking us off!

Glencoe High School Lacrosse Team

Glencoe Lacrosse

Starting this year Glencoe High School will be joining Liberty High School and Hillsboro High School in their girls lacrosse programs. Glencoe has not had a girls lacrosse team for the past few years, their lacrosse program really took a hit during Covid-19. This year they are advertising their new club, as no experience needed to join. I joined and have never played a high school sport, but really wanted to have the family aspect of a sport. With it being a club sport and not a school funded team, the fees for students to join are higher than a traditional high school sport. If you would like to support the club feel free to email glencoegirlslacrosse@gmail.com with any questions about how you can support.

School Board Appreciation Week

School Board Appreciation

January is designated as School Board Appreciation month. As a former school board member of 8 years, I know the passion and dedication that goes into this volunteer position. Across Oregon’s 197 school districts, there are over 1400 school board members that oversee the education and classroom experience of over 550,000 students.

Our board members volunteer their time to advocate for school funding, they set the school boundaries within their district, they invest in career-tech programs, they oversee the budget and set the policies for class sizes and student/teacher ratio. Their role is critical. Join me in thanking our Senate District 15 school board members in Forest Grove, Hillsboro and Beaverton!

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon’s past and we must honor them well into our future.
