Out and About in Senate District 15

This week, Nickole and I are at the NCSL Summit in Denver, CO. Our newsletter is lighter, but we are busily learning from, and sharing ideas with other state legislators and staff from around the country. We look forward to sharing highlights from the conference in next week's newsletter.

Virtual Community Conversation

CC #92

Last week was my 92nd Community Conversation since becoming a legislator. We had a great discussion and covered topics from homelessness to bipartisanship in the Oregon Legislature. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to hear from community members about the issues they are concerned about. I look forward to seeing you at my next event, Wed. 8/10 from 6:00-7:00 at the Cornelius Library.

Portland Empower - Calling Portland Metro Area Entrepreneurs!

From Onaben.org

It just got easier for aspiring small business owners in Oregon to market their products and services online. ONABEN, a national nonprofit that helps aspiring entrepreneurs, and GoDaddy partnered to give free websites to more artists and small businesses through the Oregon Empower program, ONABEN announced.

ONABEN will provide website development training. GoDaddy will provide two years of free website hosting. After that, the web hosting company will offer reduced website hosting rates.

“This is an incredible opportunity for small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs to build their brands outside of Oregon and even the United States,” said Veronica Maturino, CEO at ONABEN. “Regardless of your minority status, if you live in Oregon and have a small business or you’ve thought about starting a small business, we can help you create a website that will get you traction.”

The training can be self-paced, one-on-one with ONABEN staff or a cohort of entrepreneurs learning together.

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon’s past and we must honor them well into our future.
