Legislative Updates
9-8-8 Line is Live
This week, another resource became available to help Oregonians (and those across the country) in crisis. 988 is live and ready to take calls. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing a mental health crisis and need help, do not hesitate to call. There is no shame, just compassion. Calm, caring voices are on the other end of the line to help, thanks to Lines For Life.
In the 2021 legislative session, working on 988 and the mobile crisis team bill, HB 2417, was a priority for me . The pandemic did not create the mental health crisis, it only exasperated it. Help is improving!
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for people experiencing a behavioral health crisis to call, text or chat online at 988lifeline.org. Calls may be responded to in English or Spanish. Text and online chat are currently only available in English.
People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.

Education Updates
Expanded Summer Programs
‘Eyes watching, ears listening’: Portland-area schools tee up kindergarten success with expanded summer programs, The Oregonian, July 9, 2022.
'The Legislature allocated $150 million of state funds for summer learning grants this year, after seeing success from the $200 million invested for K-12 summer programming in 2021. A huge infusion of federal pandemic aid also helped school districts to expand summer programs for early learners this year, most with a focus on students from low-income backgrounds, students of color and those with special needs.'
According to the article, Hillsboro School District was able to double the amount of pre-K students in its bilingual enrichment program. Read more on how Hillsboro and other local school districts are investing these funds in the full article here.

Sunday Market Meet Up
The Sunday Market Meet Up was a great community conversation this past weekend! Topics of discussion included: reproductive health protections, trans equality and advocacy, open primaries, environmental concerns/decarbonization, school board training, safe storage for firearms clarification, Hawthorn Farm Walk-in Clinic reduced services and the need for mental health workforce and resources.
These meetings are a way to meet neighbors and a way that I get to know what the community needs me to respond to. I hope to see you at Community Conversation #92.
La Strada dei Pastelli Chalk Art Festival in Hillsboro
Saturday was a beautiful (perfect weather) day for the La Strada dei Pastelli Chalk Art Festival in the Hillsboro Downtown area. Thank you Tualatin Valley Creates and City of Hillsboro for supporting the Arts and working to build community. It was good to see so many happy faces!
Plaza Los Amigos Groundbreaking
Last Thursday was a beautiful day to break ground on an exciting 113-unit affordable housing complex in Cornelius, Oregon. Plaza Los Amigos is a project partnership with Bienestar and REACH Community Development. Senator Chuck Riley, Representative Susan McLain and myself (then a House District 30 Rep), directed ARPA resources to help fund this project. Sí, Se Puede!

Onward & Upward,
Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon’s past and we must honor them well into our future.
