Legislative Updates

Session Begins!

Yesterday the Legislative Session for 2022 began with the Senate and House adopting rules and laying the groundwork for the next five weeks. The short session occurs in even numbered years and lasts no longer than 35 days. Video of the opening sessions can be found here:

Committee Meetings Have Begun
Use the Oregon Legislative Information System (OLIS) any day of the week to watch a floor session or committee meetings, learn about a bill, or submit public testimony. See below for a “How To” on signing up to testify. I use the same system to provide support on the bills I’m sponsoring. Just yesterday I spoke in support of House Bill 4029 in the House Committee on Education regarding training for school board members in Oregon. Watch my testimony here

Follow the links here to see the topics we are discussing in my current Senate Committee assignments.

How to Submit Testimony on a Bill

For each bill a committee considers there will be a Public Hearing.  During this time members of the public are encouraged to provide support, opposition or context on the bill to the committee.  Using the Oregon Legislative Information System (OLIS), you can find a bill, or committee meeting using the links in the upper right:

Once a Public Hearing for a bill is scheduled, you can follow links on that bill’s OLIS page to the agenda for the committee meeting.  On the page for every committee the dates/times of their meetings are displayed on the right:

Click on the date for the bill for which you’d like to submit testimony and you’ll be taken to the agenda page for the specific day/time.  Each meeting’s agenda displays unique links where you can provide written and verbal testimony regarding the bills being discussed that day (see example below).  Use those links to sign up.  I encourage you to make your voice heard in the Capitol!

Education Updates

Senate Bill 1590

This legislative session, I am once again sponsoring a bill to implement Computer Science Education standards in K-12 public schools in Oregon. SB 1590 will:

  • Create a comprehensive plan to provide computer science education to every public school student by the 2027-2028 school year, the first two steps in a nine-step process (as shown in the one pager.)
  • Create equity and diversity in STEM fields, as all Oregon students will now have access to CS Education.
  • Help address workforce issues by teaching computer science in schools statewide, while also keeping Oregon students competitive with other states as they enter the workforce.

Follow along with the progress of this important bill on OLIS.

CTE covers many different fields, including health care, information technology, advanced manufacturing, hospitality and management and many more, as described in ACTE’s What is CTE? page and Sector Sheets. CTE encompasses many different types of education, from classroom learning to certification programs to work-based learning opportunities outside the classroom.

Celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month

Black History Month celebrates the contributions and sacrifices that African Americans have made to help shape our country. It is celebrated annually in the month of February, coinciding with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Each year is given a specific theme, this year is the theme of Black Health and Wellness, giving recognition to those in the medical field. Learn more about Black History Month themes from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)

Senate District 15 lies on Kalapuya land. The Atfalati were the northernmost band of the Kalapuya that lived along the Tualatin River in present day Washington County. Many of the Atfalati descendants are members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon today. The Indigenous Peoples of this land experienced a painful history of colonial violence, sickness and removal from their land. The Atfalati are the foundation of Oregon’s past and we must honor them well into our future.
