Next Wednesday, December 1st at 5:30 pm, I'll be holding a joint town hall with Senator Jama, Representative Pham, Representative Campos, and Representative Valderrama to discuss immigration and refugee resettlement policy in Oregon. In recent years, the Oregon Legislature has passed significant legislation to make Oregon a more welcoming state for new residents. Legislators will discuss progress thus far and the path forward to making Oregon a more equitable, prosperous, and inclusive state for all.

Registration for the event is quick and easy - sign up here:  https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAsc--vrj4pGNIe9GUpmOs8E5A9kTrR8Mjo.

Task Force on Underrepresented Student Success

One of the pieces of legislation from the 2021 legislative session that I'm most excited about is HB 2590. The bill established a Joint Task Force on Student Success for Underrepresented Students in Higher Education.

Last week, we met for the first time, electing my esteemed colleague Representative Alonso Leon as the chair of the task force. It's exciting to begin plans to tour the state and hear from students on how we can better support them to succeed in college, university, and beyond. Prior to becoming a legislator, I spent nearly two decades working on education policy, focusing on higher education. Some of my proudest accomplishments include securing funds to begin the Dreamers Center at Portland Community College and starting a legislative internship program at PCC, but I know there is so much more that we need to do.

I look forward to serving on the taskforce and sharing our upcoming meetings with you.

Updates from the District

On Tuesday, November 16th, I had the pleasure of presenting (in-person!) to the Lake Oswego City Council. You can watch my remarks (starting at 9:34 mark in the video) at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLwI3-hWFrs. Thank you to the Lake Oswego City Council for this opportunity to update the community on major pieces of legislation and local investments.

I also was thrilled to meet with partners from the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce and Tualatin Mayor Frank Bubenik to discuss the needs of local businesses and how we can wisely invest resources to provide economic vitality and resilient communities. The Tualatin Chamber does a great job of convening local businesses to discuss challenges and opportunities, including at their annual Key Leaders Breakfast. I unfortunately wasn't able to attend this year, but my District Director Gordon Levitt represented my office at the event.

Happy Thanksgiving!

After a very busy couple of weeks, I'm looking forward to time with my family and the start of the holiday season. It's been wonderful to reconnect out in the community with constituents and local leaders, reminding me of just how grateful I am to represent you in the legislature. Serving in the Oregon State Senate remains a dream come true - thank you for continuing to share your hopes and dreams on local and statewide issues with me. It's an absolute honor to serve you and I wish you and your families the very best as we kick off the holidays.

As always, please let me know if you need any assistance. My office and I will work to connect you with resources and get your questions answered as quickly as possible.
